Neighborhood social networking for Boston

A few years ago, Joe Porcelli started up a site for Jamaica Plain residents to meet and organize online. Now Porcelli is expanding Neighbors for Neighbors to every Boston neighborhood.

He's using Ning as a platform.

Also see Hyde Park Mass - also built on Ning.

Following in what Joe set up, The Boston Civic Exchange, an outgrowth of the first Boston Civic Summit (Adam was a presenter) has also set up and started to create a listing of neighborhood associations from around the city.

The Civic Exchange group hived off after the summit ended and was encouraged to continue on its own by several city councilors. A team of people from all over the city have been meeting monthly since last year.

They are currently using free space at Google Sites for static presentations - a work in progress by the way - a networking section is also under construction at NING.

The Civic Exchange is focusing on issues such as succes stories on neighborhood issues and developing a how-to database for how to deal with certain city services. The catch phrase "how did YOU solve MY problem," is periodically spoken in meetings.

The Boston Civic Exchange is also getting ready to start visiting neighborhood associations around the city to make their presentation and to solicit participation.

While many elected officials offer information like this on their web sites, The Boston Civic Exchange is completely apolitical.

You can visit the sparsely populated web site, under construction but you will ge the drift at: http://www.bostoncivicexchange.org

From there, neighborhood association reps can participate in a neighborhood on-line questionnaire form toward getting involved and listed at the site. A PDF version is also available for downloading and printing for those who may not be on line - yet.
