Tobin Bridge closure

By roadman - 6/19/09 - 2:51 pm

For almost three hours now, the northbound Tobin Bridge has been completely closed to traffic. Boston.com has been reporting "an emergency", and WBZ Traffic has been reporting "due to police activity".

Perhaps we're dealing with another Mr. Stuart here. That would explain the cloak of silence surrounding whatever incident has happened on the bridge.

Thanks to the less politically correct Boston Police Department Twitter feed:

JUMPER: A man has jumped off the Tobin Bridge, pronounced dead on scene, expect delays.

Thanks for the confirmation, Adam.

BTW, one lane on the bridge has been re-opened to traffic, but the ramp from I-93 north is still closed.

This just in from the Suffolk County DA's office

He was 47 and from Lynn, but officials are not releasing his name because the death appears to be a suicide:

The preliminary investigation suggests that the man jumped from the upper deck of the bridge and landed on the lower deck, sustaining fatal injuries.
