Singin' and blockin' the sidewalk in the rain

Alicia Priselac photographs a woman who managed to take up pretty much the entire width of Federal Street this afternoon with an umbrella that would make you think she stole it off somebody's back porch except that it was black.

but its always me who ends up getting wet.

Even normal-sized umbrellas are too wide for many/most Boston-area streets.

And then sometimes people have the umbrella low and forward, not looking where they're going, and with the pointy bits hovering around face height.

Hardly any of the buildings around here have awnings. It rains often and hard enough, it would be a nice feature if they did.

When I was at a conference in Portland, OR and it was raining on cue, the guy at an outdoor cab desk at the Hilton outed me as a native. He had been watching as I scooted under two awnings, waited for the light, dashed across one street and under another awning, waited for the light, then dashed to my destination - all without getting too wet or carrying an umbrella.

Can't do that in Boston or any other city where deep awnings aren't a consistent feature.

This is Congress St. looking toward Post Office Square, not Federal St.
