Rebel Shakespeare Company touring Hamlet in Boston
By amusings - 7/6/09 - 7:57 pm
So over the winter I asked Universal Hub users for ideas on where to stage our next tour for Rebel Shakespeare Company. I got some good suggestions, and I opted to go for the Boston Harbor Islands. I connected with a wonderful person there named Kirsten Sherman, who helped me secure a date, and set us up. In the meantime, we got 2 other offers to perform in Boston, without me having to go hunt down venues.
I'd like to personally thank the Uhub community for their helpful suggestions. You guys rule.
As the dates approach, I'd also like to invite all y'all out to see some Shakespeare. Our group touring is the "Teen Intensive Program," and the name is derived from the fact they are cast, learn the parts/block the show, and prepare a production in 3 weeks. What these high school students can do with a block of text is pretty amazing. I do hope that you'll come out and see them.
This month they're touring "Hamlet." Next month they're doing "Twelfth Night." see our website at for more details.
July 18, Saturday. 11:30am, Christian Herter Park, Publick Theatre, Brighton MA (across the street from WBZ on Soldier's Field Road). They are opening for Orfeo Group Theatre's production of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)". Rebel show is FREE. The Orfeo show is $15 BUT if you say "I'm a Rebel" you get in for $10, which is a crazy substantial savings.
July 19, Sunday. 5pm, Robbins Farm Park, Arlington MA. Arlington Center for the Arts Shakespeare Festival. Free Show.
July 25, Saturday. 2pm, Boston Harbor Islands, George's Island. The show is free, but the ferry ride will run you 14 bucks or so. Ferries leave from Long Wharf and several other locations. visit for more details on planning your trip out there. If you've never been... it may be worth the trip to see a play, and chill on the islands.
There are lots of other shows planned, in Salem MA, Haverhill, Newburyport... so maybe come on out. All the shows are free. So in this economy, that's a big hell yeah.

Did you perform in Somerville last summer?

Some outdoor Shakespeare company did 'Romeo and Juliet' at the Growing Center in Union Square, Somerville, last summer. I don't remember the name of the company. Was it yours?
Also, do you have a web page listing all of your shows? You did not link to one anywhere in your post.

Rebel Shakespeare Company
Or maybe not?

The schedule on that web site does not list any of the shows that are in this post, so I'm not 100% sure it's the right site.
Teen Intensive is correct

"The July Teen Intensive presents Hamlet
performance dates and times TBA
The August Teen Intensive presents Twelfth Night
performance dates and times TBA"
Hamlet in July and Twelfth Night in August. It's spot on, just not fully detailed yet.
that's the right site...

i just haven't gone live with the full version of the hamlet tour dossier. i'm working on it now, even though i'd rather be in bed.
:-)
check back in the morning, and you can also go to www.rebelshakespeare.org/hamlet for the direct link. once it's up.
and the other group that did R&J wasn't us, even though we did do R&J last year. we never made it further south than the rose garden in the lynn woods.
thanks for the interest and support you guys! i love UHUB!
Thanks

I'd also like to see the Winter's Tale schedule when you get a chance.
Winter's Tale & Hamlet updates...

Had to completely redo the Rebel website last night because dreamweaver decided to change all the links to site specific from document specific and that kind of messed all my graphics and links up site-wise... a little project never ever is "little."
The full "Hamlet" Tour schedule is up at http://www.rebelshakespeare.org/hamlet
Some of the shows are 90min long (from an original 4 hour text) with some "and then this happened!" in the middle. When you're only given 2 hours at a site it's hard to do a full show. I'll be notating on the schedule which shows are the truncated 90min, and which are the 2-3 hour shows (they did cut the script down, because ... well. 4 hours is a lot).
"The Winter's Tale" is being put on at Winter Island in Salem MA by our younger group... ages 10-16. We have 2 complete casts, "Stratford" and "London." Shows are July 19 and 20 (sunday and monday) at 1 and 5pm both days. My son's in the Stratford cast, so he will be performing 1pm Sunday and 5 pm Monday, and I'll be there all day Monday. Both casts are equally good, and you will be hopefully pleasantly surprised at how well 10-16 year old kids can do Shakespeare. It's pretty neat. I remember the first show I saw 5 years ago was Two Gentleman of Verona, and it totally ruled.
Perhaps we'll see you at one of the shows. Thanks for being interested!
Perhaps you imagined that, Ron?

It might have been but a mid-Somerville night's dream.
ooooooh

that might make an interesting and clever parody...
You're welcome!

Glad I and the others could be helpful. Unfortunately, I believe I'm going to be out of state for July 18th. Both shows sound good and the Publick Theatre is right around the corner from my house.
Maybe I can make it out to the Georges Island show. I wanted to get out to the islands again this year at least once, so that could be fun.
