Is that a twister, Auntie Em?

Nah, not a real twister

It sure looks like a twister was sucking all the sneakers out of the New Balance building in Allston around 3:45 this afternoon, doesn't it? Meanwhile, over by North Station, Scott saw impending doom:

As a stormchaser-in-training (see http://newworkplace.wordpress.com/2008/12/23/labor...), these photos gave me a thrill.

And the Storm Prediction Center is showing a lot of wind and hail around these parts: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/today.html.

But no tornadoes as of this writing...

Isn't that the home of WRKO? Maybe it was just a windbag Howie Carr low affront.

I'm a weather spotter with SKYWARN and it's not uncommon to see a lot of clouds that look ominous, even on a nice day. When you're new to spotting, everything looks like an anvil, mammatus, shelf cloud, wall cloud or funnel! I still do doubletakes when I see things like this and I've been at it for 10 years!

That does indeed look ominous, but had it been what it looked like...well, free shoes for everybody!

When I was watching the clouds move by, the "funnel" was this blobbby thing that just happened to go into a sort of funnel-looking shape as it passed behind the building (if you look carefully, you'll see it's not really right overhead the NB building). I didn't even notice it looking like a funnel until I brought the photo up on my laptop, so it's probably due more to the shortening of perspective you can get sometimes with a zoom lens.
