Rozzie Chinese take-out place wants to serve a later crowd

The Boston Licensing Board holds a hearing on Wednesday, July 29 to decide whether to let Mandarin House, 633 Hyde Park Ave. stay open until 1 a.m., Monday through Saturday (currently, it closes at 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday).

Has anybody ever tried it? I have to admit we don't tend to stray from Golden House on Washington Street.

It's pretty asinine that a restaurant owner has to beg to be able to be open for business when they want to be.

Ah america, the land of the free market, where setting up a shop means the government can controll what you sell, where you sell it, and when you sell it.

Or "neighbors" who make use of influence they have with local officials to get local governmental entities to block activities that are perfectly legal -- but distasteful to said neighbors.

Who are tired of waking up to gunfire at 2 a.m., as in the case of Packy Connors ...

This particular take-out place isn't exactly in a residential zone (its next-door neighbors are a convenience store and an auto-body shop; there's a bar across the street and more stores on the other side of busy Hyde Park Ave.), so no immediate neighbors to disturb. But in general, given that 350 years or so of history has left us with restaurants and stores that often are right up against residential areas, why shouldn't there be regulations to limit the effect on neighbors?

To offset the late night noise?

There's reasons for restrictions on these things.

yet I won't be testifying against it.

Adam, you probably know this place, and if you have any negative feelings for it, it is for the same reason. This is at the corner of Hyde Park Avenue and Canterbury Street. A market is on one side, a pub (Maggie Mae's) is across Canterbury Street. My one and only gripe- no parking. Why do I care? Coming home from many places by car, I have to travel Canterbury Street. The road on the side of the restaurant is 2 cars wide, yet cars park there, creating a bottleneck. Taking a right from Hyde Park Ave to Canterbury? Double parked cars, cars parked in the bus stop, and the attending bus stopped to drop off people keeping me from making a right.

I don't think changing the hours will make things worse or better, so whatever. But it is quality of life things that can be only addressed through things like licensing hearings (assuming they are not corrupt).

Oh, and Rozzie Chinese food- it's only the Triple Eatery on Cummins Highway for me. But then again I was going there when it was Nevio's and a pizza place. Then again, I used to go to there when it was a laundromat. The Chinese place at Putterham Circle is good, too.

That's our go-to place for sit-down Chinese food - can't be beat in the area, partly because of the good food and service, partly because that's pretty much it in the area. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't a single sit-down Chinese restaurant in all of JP, Roslindale, Hyde Park or West Roxbury (Asian Thai on River Street does have a small dining room, but I've never actually seen anybody in it).

As for Mandarin House, I've never tried it, but yeah, I can see parking being an issue (although not after midnight, I'm betting). Will have to try Triple Eatery one of these days.

Technically speaking, Golden House can be eat in or take out. Not that they have table service or anything, but they do have a few tables and benches. My kids are fascinated by the idea of eating there, but I have yet to relent. I think Dragon King or whatever it is across from Romano's also has some tables.

And Ive heard that Bamboo in the Holiday Inn in Dedham is good. Ive been there once and only found it to be ok. But I only like 4-5 things when it comes to chinese food: Lobster Sauce, pork/beef fried rice w/shrimp, crab rangoons, chicken fingers, egg rolls, General Gao chicken, Orange Chicken, spare ribs, pork strips, and chicken wings.

Ok, I guess thats more than 4-5 things.

That Polynesian style was well-represented in the area when you had the Tahiti, the Honolulu further down Rte 1, plus a couple of places in Walpole. Good stuff.

Heh! The kidlet and I have spent more time than I should admit playing table football or just heads or tails at those tables while waiting for food (also cool: The infinite-mirror effect). And you're right about Dragon King (meh food, but with a great neon sign). West Garden in West Roxbury has a couple of tables, too, along with a giant urn of tea.

But I was thinking of places where you sit down and somebody brings you a pot of tea that you can drink after you take the cloth napkins out of your tea cup :-).

And Pete, thanks for reminding me about the Tahiti (located on Mah Way, which annoys the family because every time we go by now, I start singing "And I did it mah way ..."). It's really like something out of the 1960s, right down to the Polynesian murals on the walls of the bar and the red seats.
