State to fund study of another Blue Line extension project

If the state can pay to study extending the Blue Line at one end to Charles/MGH, even though it has no money to actually build the extension, the least it can do is pay to study extending the Blue Line to Lynn at the other end:

The Lynn extension has been long promised. It is severely needed and would be a massive boon to the downtown Lynn area, I hope they can make it work. The sooner the better.

I hear the extension has been promised for about 50 years, now. There's not much that's natural left of the marshes between here and Revere. I'm pretty sure it can handle light rail.

Operations and capital expenses are different kinds of money. Plus, for expansions you might get the Feds to pick up a lot of the tab...

The state buys it all these new toys (or even better: Makes the T buy all its new toys), then walks away and the T now has to suck up the operating costs.

As a guy who grew up in Lynn, I can say that this would help the city tremendously. However, we have a commuter rail. If they feel transit is so important in Lynn why not just increase commuter rail service?

I think that's a more suitable option. At a certain distance from downtown, rapid transit (either heavy rail like the Red Line, or light rail like the Green) becomes less attractive due to trip length. Commuter rail from Lynn to North Station is much faster than the Blue Line would be. However, current headways are not very good. What I'd like to see happen on that line (along with a few other lines) is electrification from downtown to Salem, and high frequency service by Electric Multiple Unit cars (EMU). Short trains (1 to 3 cars depending on time of day) would make all stops, leaving the less frequent and larger diesel trains to run express from Salem to North Station. You would get something closer to rapid transit headways, yet maintain the better speed of commuter rail.
