MBTA Transit Police tweet thefts of bicycles and bike parts are up, especially at Davis and Alewife. Buy those heavy locks and record those serial numbers now, police say.
Because someone thought it would make sense to not tie the free bike cards to a persons name. Theres no restriction, ask the agent, get a card, get in.
Also, some of the thefts probably are taking place outside the bike cage, in the general area, as the bike cages fill up quickly.
But yeah, youd think the MBTA police would stop by to investigate
Why they don't drop GPS chips into the tubes a few dummy bikes and follow the thieves to their hideout is beyond me. Such a scheme worked well in San Francisco in breaking up a few major theft rings.
but from experience the cutting of kryptonite chains are only possible by acetylene torch or 8 blades from a dewalt sawsall. I recomend kryptonite chains.
Saturday night, I locked my 50cc scooter up outside of Porter Square near the Toad in order to get a little bite to eat at Christopher's around 11 PM. When I got back to my scooter, it was on its side. I'm guessing someone pushed it off its kickstand and tried to walk away with it before realizing it was tied up to the post behind it and then left it.
I'd prefer to believe someone wanted to steal it more than just kick it over for the hell of it.

Wasn't this the whole point of those "secure" bike cages?

If they're covered by cameras and restricted to people who have the cards, why are bikes being stolen, and why aren't criminals being prosecuted?
Because someone thought it

That would require some actual detective work Lou.
BPD /SPD / CPD ? MBTAPD doesn't like that.
They'd much rather you just fill out a report at the station, so they can file it away.

Careful what lock you pair with that chain

Besides picking or smashing of locks, some tubular locks can be opened by twisting a Bic pen or piece of toilet paper tube into them.

I know this is BPD but it might be for Cambridgevillians too.
I lived in SF and had 2 bikes stolen in 3 months, so I wouldn't recommend looking to san frantastic for workable ideas.
