FiOS Guy won't be voting for Menino

Of course, even if he wanted to, he couldn't, since he obviously doesn't live in Boston.
The other day, the Globe explained why Bostonians get to see roughly 72,000 commercials a day in which FiOS Guy triumphs over Cable Oaf even though they can't sign up for it. Verizon says it'll get around to wiring up New England's largest city one of these days and that dense cities are simply harder to wire than spread-out suburbs, but Tom Menino says it's a personal vendetta against him because he wants the company to pay taxes on its wires along public ways.
Ars Technica reports Boston isn't alone: New York and Washington have been slow to get FiOS as well.

I'm pretty sure Geico
I'm pretty sure Geico insurance is the same - they don't do business in MA, but they advertise in the media market to reach other states.

As of March 2009, Geico offers car insurance in MA. I requested a quote from them yesterday.

It was once the case that they and the rest of the national chains didn't offer policies here (I lost my discounted GEICO insurance moving from MD to here). Once the insurance board opened up the market for competitiveness and removed restrictions like mandatory SDIP usage, most national chains moved in with policies. The previous system primarily catered to smaller offices willing to play within the bounds of the insurance board, whereas it meant too much specialization for national companies to want to spend the time and effort to cater to the state board's every whim.

Disingenuous Verizon
In the article, Verizon says that they need a statewide franchise law so they won't have to go through individual approvals which can take "as long as three years". According to this letter from the Cambridge City Manager, though, they have never applied for a franchise in Cambridge; of course it'll take a while if you don't even apply!
