The Wreck of the Edmond FitzRedSox

Soxaholix channels its inner Gordon Lightfoot:
The legend lives on from ol' Mattapan on down of the mistake Theo made with John Smoltzy.
One mistake it is said, isn't too much to dread, unless compounded by Lugo and Penny.
With thoughts of a ring more, this team we came to adore, but the tales of October were a bit early. ...

Fine Whines from Fenway Fans
Cute ditty, but c'mon now, this team has won two World Series this decade and has turned itself into one of the top franchises in the game.
Please, Red Sox Nation, don't go from being fatalistic losers to spoiled winners!

You have to understand that they swing in the wind. Fatalism is our middle name over there. When things are bad, they're REALLY bad. It's extremely easy to tap into our pre-2004 pathos and the Rays losses and the debacle called the 4th inning last night are like hitting the Panic Button with a sledgehammer.
We'll be fine when we take the next 3 and close the gap between the Yankees and us.
I mean, you have to admit that at the beginning of the season the outlook was nowhere close to what we're seeing now from a lot of the players.
By the way, I'm sitting in South Station waiting for a train right now. I've heard Smoltz's name brought up at least a dozen times in as many conversations near me. From what I'm hearing, you'd think his first name is "Fucking".
Smoltz = HOF territory career
John Smoltz has put together a career worthy of Hall consideration. Maybe he's at the end of a long and good run.
Your anecdote about South Station and Smoltz says a lot! I'm a big pro sports fan, but one reason why I'll never be a true Bostonian is that I cannot understand the small town fanaticism about sports. I've never seen so many people who bask in the reflected glory or misery of their teams.
Never a big Cubs fan when I lived in Chicago ...
... (as a South Sider, I favored the White Sox) -- but I always liked the way Cubs fans almost always loved the team and its old reliable players, win or lose.
I though Smoltz was a great pitcher (and a good guy), way back when I lived in Atlanta (and never had a reason to change my mind). Everyone begins to wear down eventually.
Smoltzie
Part of the reason people are having such a visceral reaction to Smoltz is because he *is* one of us now and we want him to win so badly; for us, for the team, for himself. I think with every bad outing and utter loss we're all just realizing it's just not going to happen for him and for us and for the team unfortunately.
The fact that we don't really have a lot to fall back on just this second to relieve him of his duties so that we can give him another shot down the road or see him in more limited action just stings even more.
Smoltz will be in the Hall, no doubt. Sox fans just want to see him go out in a blaze of glory...not in flames.
I can't help but feel bad
I can't help but feel bad for the guy. Smoltz is going to be remembered as one of the best pitchers in the modern history of the game, but his post-surgery comeback with the Sox is admittedly disastrous. I have to say, I hope when he retires this isn't what people remember about him.
Was It Just Me...
... or did anybody else say "WTF?" when Terry brought Traber in in relief? I don't make a habit out of dissing Tito - he's won two World Series, so that gets him cut a LOT of slack from me, as well it should - but Traber? From the "best bullpen in baseball", as many pundits would have it?
Again, WTF?

Yeah, why didn't he bring in Masterson?
Oh, right ...
