Boarded-up West Roxbury hair place could become convenience store

The Boston Board of Appeal holds a hearing on Sept. 1 to consider a request from Sayed Halabi to turn the long closed and increasingly depressing store across the parking lot from the Spring Street Cafe into a convenience store. The hearing starts at 10:30 a.m. in Room 801 at City Hall.

Ed. trolley note: It will certainly have enough parking in what used to be a trolley turnaround area - now used by buses for the same purpose.

Can we (and the Globe) please stop using the word "shuttered" so much? I swear every other story in the Globe uses it. Is it really so bad to say "shut down?"

Otherwise, that is cool something is taking over the space.

Changed "long shutered" to "long closed and increasingly depressing."

And I won't call it a leafy neighborhood, either.

Convenience stores pose traffic and parking challenges, especially ones near high traffic areas as opposed to ones in the middle of residential neighborhoods.

The MBTA will want the driveway left unencumbered by new parking spots and the convenience store will want the bus stop on Spring St. moved so four of five cars could park in front.

There's plenty of parking available right there, the only problem I could see is people coming out of there on a regular basis and the fools who drive too fast coming from 1A and taking a right.

A convenience store would serve a large residential area very well, the nearest one to there is Little Peach in West Roxury or Pam's in Dedham, neither very close by.

Put something in there, it's been empty for far too long and really looks depressing. While they're at it they could take the billboard down from Spring St Cafe - wasn't that supposed to happen 2 years ago?

I think a convenience store at the corner would serve the area very well. There hasn't been much activity at that site in a while. I think it is time someone came up with a good idea like this. I think we should welcome anyone who wants to spend money in the area at this time in our economy. Best of luck to this guy, i hope the board of appeals gives us this store to our area. We need this; escpecially at that corner entering West Roxbury.

Lame excuses get us no where! Time to use the facility for something productive. A comment like that needs to be backed up with a better idea. Do you have a better idea??
I agree there is no close by convenience store.

It's about time something opens there! How long has that place been closed?? It is not inviting approaching West Roxbury from that end. It's an eyesore being closed ... open something there. I think a convenience store is a great option: plenty parking in the rear. And about the entrance/exit isn't it in the same area for Spring Street Cafe? So whats the big issue with that. Come on people there are plenty of lame excuses to keep it closed and plenty MORE to get it up and running for the town and the people.

I think the idea of a convenient store is a brilliant idea and one that is needed in that area since like mentioned above there are no local ones in the direct area! I think it would be great to soon see that place looking alive and open for business!....we all love to see new businesses open in such tough times best of luck to Sayed and his neighbors and West Roxbury!!

I noticed a sign on this building today - "Jasmine Nails." So I guess it won't be a convenience store after all, but another nail place.

I've lost track, how many nail places are there in W. Roxbury now?

Good luck to Sayed and the Nail Salon. Guys I have been following this story since I first saw it posted a while ago. Seems like every time the owner appraoched with an idea of a business he was faced with nonsence and comments that led no where. So yes a convenience store was on the table but who knows when that would have been approved??? Have you guys heard of "too many chefs spoil the broth" Here is a great example! It's time to get this place running whether everyone likes it or not... since when was one persons business everyone's business? I think that should be the case if everyone wants to pitch in and pay the morgage/fees/stress and all that comes along with these tough times. We are all in the same boat and if someone says otherwise they must be from another planet.
Time to move on...lets hound someone else now..hahahaha
And again.... Good luck to the new Nail Salon!!!!!

I wish them well too.

But I think it's OK to also wish that when a new local business opens that it will be something different from the existing businesses.

Good luck to them, If there are many nail salons and they are all open, then there must be a healthy market and strong demand for it. One more place, which according to my wife will be perfect due to parking, means competition, which will only help keep my wife's pampering costs down (hehe). Also as a fellow businessman in this area, I must make it known, our local government is not friendly to business. The people in charge are stuck in the early 90's and don't recognize that West Roxbury has changed and requires a more diverse caliber of business proffesionals. They dont want anything to change and simply say no for the hell of it. There is no common sense especially when it's not your money on the line. It's very easy to shut away good business ideas, when you are not the one paying the bills. I am glad this man has come into the area and decided to invest in our neighborhood. The previous owner was a slumlord and we all saw how much of an eyesoar it was. For many years that place has been a depressent as I drive home, now I can see a vibrant business and I'm happy about it. Gd luck to both the landlord, whoever he may be, and the folks that are running the salon.
