Yoon, Flaherty use same cliched song to appeal to the disaffected youth of today

David Bernstein is put out that Sam Yoon and Michael Flaherty both used "Shipping Up to Boston" on their music face-off today on WFNX:

... Maybe [Yoon] was trying to be funny, using the Dropkicks to beat the Irishman. I don't know; all I know is that they USED THE SAME GODDAM SONG!!!!! ...

Eh, its got the word "Boston" in it... If this were the 1980's everyone would list "Dirty Water" as their fav song as well.

A couple of months ago Sam had Good/Better analogies on his website too.

If that song wasn't played once an hour on every rock station in Boston and then again at every sporting event then I think he'd have a gripe.

I've also had trouble finding a differentiator in any of the candidates. I do find Yoon to be a bit petulant (see: Peter Campbell) so I don't think I'd vote for him anyway.

From the Flaherty campaign:

Ken Casey, the lead vocalist for Boston musical sensations the Dropkick Murphy’s, threw his support behind Michael Flaherty’s campaign for Mayor of Boston. The singing star made the announcement after a joint appearance with Flaherty on WFNX radio's "My Song Is Better Than Your Song" contest. Flaherty and Casey were promoting the Dropkick Murphy hit "Ship It Up To Boston."

"One of the goals of the Dropkick Murphy's is to bring people together and that is what Michael Flaherty will do as the next Mayor of Boston", said Casey. Casey further explained that "Michael Flaherty shares the core values of the Dropkick Murphy's: working class solidarity, friendship, loyalty and self- improvement as a means to bettering society."

"As an artist, I fully support Michael Flaherty's plan to stimulate the city's creative economy," said Casey. Flaherty recently released a ten-point plan to bolster the city's commitment to growing its arts sectors and supporting its local artists and small arts-related businesses. According to Flaherty, "Boston is losing our artists and members of our commercial gallery sector to other cities and we need to use their talents and contributions to revitalize our neighborhoods and refuel our local economy.”

Boosting our creative economy is a great way for us to bring more revenue into our city and help us grow our way out of this economic downturn. This is the first time I am posting here, but I think this is a perfect opportunity to help answer questions people have about my plan to help our city's artistic community.

One of the first things I plan on doing is reorganizing our city’s structure to allow for a high level position that directly oversees, coordinates, and facilitates all city programs relevant to the promotion of the city’s artistic community. This person will work directly with individual artists, arts-related businesses, as well as help create educational programs both within the city’s schools and the colleges and universities. We need to help the members of the artistic community so that they can in turn help our city.

It was great having Ken Casey call into WFNX this morning and let the residents of our city know that I am very serious about reaching out to artists and providing them with the leg up they need to get the ball rolling. If you want to read my full white paper on the creative economy go to my website's Issues page. http://michaelflaherty.com/?l=issues

This quote wouldn't be half as funny if the press release hadn't gotten the name of the song wrong, but hey:

Casey further explained that "Michael Flaherty shares the core values of the Dropkick Murphy's: working class solidarity, friendship, loyalty and self- improvement as a means to bettering society."

And the need to FIND A WOODEN LEG!!

Glad I wasn't the only one who saw that! "Ship it up to Boston," LOL! And it's a peg leg, nobody has established whether it is wooden. Ahab had a leg made from whale bone.

Sorry Henry but the lyric is wooden leg "to find my wooden leg! I'm a sailor peg..."

Hmmm. I'd have sworn the line was "find my peg leg."
