Waiting six hours in the rain in West Roxbury

That's what some people did on Saturday to get their kids into a class at the Roche Community Center. Andrew Watson reports:

... I arrived at the official opening time of 9am, hoping to be able to get my kids into a swimming class. It was conveniently timed and very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, I wasn't the only person who thought that. Someone I know emerged from the center just after I arrived: she'd arrived at 3:30, and hadn't been first in line. She wanted to make sure her kids got into their swim classes, since there are only 5 kids per class. ...

They could always teach their kids how to swim at the DCR pools.

Oh wait. We have 10% unemployment, and this state is too stupid to get somebody trained as a lifeguard to work for the last 3 weeks of summer.

Nice try

He was signing up for the fall session. You know, like November, when the outdoor DCR pools are all closed because of the outdoor temperatures?

So in practical terms, his choices around Roslindale are the Roslindale Community Center, the Roche center (which I think uses the pool at West Roxbury High), the Draper pool and, um, some place in Hyde Park.

Well...

...the DCR pools should be open in November. The world needs more Cosmo Kramers.

Which is why we have the

Which is why we have the Charles.

"Some place in Hyde Park" is closed

Than would be the Hyde Park YMCA which has just closed for a year-long renovation.

There are shortages of staff and qualified instructors in some areas.

Best advise is to phone ahead and ask if there is a sign-up list and if there is a waiting list. Many places will accommodate people that way.

In fact a waiting list will be a good reason to schedule extra training session as there is a demand in place.

or...

Thanks for the suggestions, people. I may well try the Dedham HAC.

The Dedham HAC is very

The Dedham HAC is very expensive. Best bet is West Roxbury YMCA. The swim classes are good, as are the teachers. Price is reasonable. Good luck.

Thanks!

I didn't realize the West Roxbury Y had a swim program. Cool.

Ugh - I have done this, but pre- 7AM is not happenin'

Have waited there in the cold of winter for the spring sessions, and it's ridiculous that they haven't figured out a better way.
