What a wonderful day to have crews working on Storrow Drive

WBZ's Traffic on the Threes just reported that Storrow Drive westbound is now backed up all the way to 93. The reporter said it's probably because of all the students moving in and, oh, yeah, the work crews in the righthand lane between Dartmouth and Mass. Ave.

Still no word of a sardine-canning, though.

Dang!

This will give people plenty of time to notice that they shouldn't be on Storrow Drive - or to be told by drivers in stopped vehicles. Even then, they won't have the needed speed to wedge!

It's gonna throw off the whole betting pool!

Did we get one last year?

Did the bridge not collect any tin scalps last year? I know we got a few during the year, but I don't see one on move-in weekend.

That's a great idea!

There's a town in Alaska that puts a big steel tower on the ice in the river and there is a pool to see who can guess when it will fall through the ice in the springtime (you can now place your bets online). Maybe we could raise extra money for the city by having a continuous 50/50 pool on when somebody rips open the top of their truck.

Any ideas on how to keep it random if you open it up to betting - if you do it's a surefire winner and you can be elected mayor for life! Job comes with free pair of scissors for cutting ribbons.

A different sort of lane closure on 495

By adamg | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 10:32am

Apparently a small plane made an emergency landing on 495 south near 140 in Mansfield this morning.

Simulation of the landing:

"Apparently" landed on I-495?!?

By roadman | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:06am

Both Channel 4 and Boston.com have photos of the plane sitting in the I-495 southbound travel lanes. So it seems that there is no question the pilot landed on the highway.

OK, I was being Globe-ish

By adamg | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:08am

You're right. At the time I posted, I hadn't seen that.

Boston.com headline was just changed

By roadman | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:12am

- they had still been saying 'apparently' even after posting the photo.

Maybe "apparently landed"

By Dave | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:14am

Maybe "apparently landed" meant that they were allowing for the possibility that he just drove it out there from the airport.

Winner, winner

Chicken dinner.

Hmm, didn't hear this on Traffic on the 3s

By adamg | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 12:46pm

The Globe now reports the plane was "a traffic reporting plane."

"How's the traffic on 495, Bob?"

"It's backed up southbound by 140 because of, um, me. ..."

It gets even better

By adamg | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 2:14pm

Channel 4 tweets the pilot was practicing stalls. No doubt to get a better feel for what traffic on Storrow Drive is like [ba-dum-dum]

If you use Microsoft's Bing

By Dave | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:08am

If you use Microsoft's Bing Maps traffic feature, they have an alert that there's a "disabled vehicle blocking 3 lanes / traffic". No mention of a plane, just a "disabled vehicle".

update: Oh, sure. Just after I pressed Post they put in an update: "small plane has made an emergency landing on the highway".

Well, they're not wrong

By adamg | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 11:09am

It is a vehicle, isn't it?

Ducks.

"Apparently". :-)

Also closures in Kenmore Square

By OFD | Tue, 09/01/2009 - 10:52am

Two of the four lanes going Outbound in Kenmore Square are also closed. Usually there is one lane onto Brookline Ave, two lanes onto Beacon St, and two lanes onto Comm Ave (Beacon/Comm share a lane). Both the Beacon and the shared Beacon/Comm Ave lanes are closed.

Whatever person(s) decided it was a great idea to cut trees along the esplanade (closing the right lane on storrow) AND also do bridge work at the Fenway/Kenmore Exit (closing one of the two exit lanes from storrow to Fenway/Kenmore) AND close two of the four lanes righ tin Kenmore Square...all on the biggest move-in day of the year, especially in the Fenway/Kenmore area, should have their head examined.
