I hope it works
As a fan of the West Newton's progamming, I hope it works.
There might be enough of a draw from the South End and Back Bay to keep it going if the rent is low enough.
They could try something like the old Cinema 733 or Harvard Square, or present Brattle - daily double features of classics, many of which have low rental rates.
Let's put it this way: your chances of seeing classics projected from 35mm celluoid at 24 fps onto a big screen are running out.
It helps that there is a film school around the corner
Emerson students and faculty will probably be one of its largest demographic blocs.
Single screen or twin?
The Sack 57 was a twin. When Loews closed it, one auditorium became the live-stage Stuart Street Playhouse while the other became an indoor golf school. Will the new cinema have both rooms again?
A Single Screen
To Ron Newman,
I have seen your posts throughout Cinema Treasures, I share your same passion for these theaters. I used to work at the Ioka Theater in Exeter, NH before it closed. Briefly at The Somerville until I could find another projection gig, and finally now working at The Stuart Street Playhouse as a projectionist. To answer your question, it is just a single screen. Maybe in the future the other old screen which got turned into a golf school, and now just used for storage will be brought back to original splendor. It will take a lot of money to rejuvinate the space, but I believe that it will greatly benefit the Boston Community, and this small but strong Theater chain. Star Theaters is run by David Bramante and runs West Newton Cinema as its central hub, The Belmont Studio Cinema, and now since Halloween... The Stuart Street Playhouse.
Please stop in sometime, I or one of the staff would be happy to show you around.
