Boston public school students won't be seeing Obama's speech

No, the city hasn't gone wingnut. For some reason, Boston public schools don't open until Sept. 10 this year.

And for some reason, Boston

And for some reason, Boston public school students don't have access to TVs in their homes.

Not the point, exactly

Some people are worried that, without parents present, Obama's secret subliminal mind waves will turn all those kids in classrooms into granny-killing zombies, so Obama must not be allowed to address students in class!

Mommy, what's a wingnut?

A person who holds extreme political views often aimed at members of the political right.

How could I forget....

Michelle Malkin

Ah yes, Michelle Malkin

My first hint not to listen to someone is when I discover they would have supported throwing themselves into a Japanese internment camp during World War 2.

Some Parents Oppose Obama School Speech

Some Parents Oppose Obama School Speech

HOUSTON — President Obama’s plan to deliver a speech to public school students on Tuesday has set off a revolt among conservative parents, who have accused the president of trying to indoctrinate their children with socialist ideas and are asking school officials to excuse the children from listening.

The uproar over the speech, in which Mr. Obama intends to urge students to work hard and stay in school, has been particularly acute in Texas, where several major school districts, under pressure from parents, have laid plans to let children opt out of lending the president an ear....

Mark Steyn, a Canadian author and political commentator, speaking on the Rush Limbaugh show on Wednesday, accused Mr. Obama of trying to create a cult of personality, comparing him to Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader.

The American right has directed many silly and offensive attacks at President Obama. But so far nothing compares with the news that right-wing demagogues on talk radio and the Web, along with Republican Party officials, are trying to stop children from hearing the president urge them to stay in school — because, they say, that is socialist propaganda. God forbid the president ever attempt to talk to any young kids

Imagine if Bush had been talking to young kids when 9/11 happened.

Oh, wait ...

everything changed

about 7 minutes after Card told Bush on 9/11, video

Previous presidents have visited public schools to speak directly to students.

The first President George Bush, a Republican, made a similar nationally broadcast speech from a Washington high school in 1991, urging students to study hard, avoid drugs and to ignore peers “who think it’s not cool to be smart.”

Yeah, but that speech didn't

Yeah, but that speech didn't involve Socialist Kenyan Stealth Undercover Muslim Public Option Mind Waves and subliminal fake birth certificate images scattered about the broadcast.

Yes, that was satire. But there are people - elected officials even - who believe easily 90% of what I just wrote.

P.S Wingnuts: You either support your President or you're with the terrorists. Remember? We're at war.

Also Not Shown in 1991

An actual president with african ancestry.

Can't have these kids actually believing that America is a place where just anybody can grow up to be president!

When I was in school, we wrote letters to Reagan as part of a project. There was no asking for permission, and no parents really giving a rat's ass. He then "wrote" us back and sent us pictures of him, the White House, etc., and told us we were great young people for sharing our views with an official, and to stay in school and work to achieve our dreams. He also sent us a publicity film about what the president does and why kids should care, which we were excited to receive and watch.

I knew my parents hadn't voted for him and weren't in too much agreement with him, but I didn't think it was a big deal, and neither did they. I don't think any of our parents or teachers or anyone thought the president would possibly say anything to kids other than telling us to stay in school and that it's good to be part of the democratic process.

I also went on a tour of the White House and the capitol as part of a school trip to Washington D.C. while George H. W.Bush was president. We weren't told anything remotely political. Again, similar message about how we were great young Americans for learning about the country's history and the democratic process and how we should stay in school and keep active in our communities.

Really, are some of these parents not familiar with what the president does?

President Obama is certainly

President Obama is certainly not the first US President to speak to children in schools. And, he is certainly not the only president to do so without some flack. But, he is the only president to do so that was accused of being un-American, a socialist, and needing to have his words censored. Its a sad day in this Country when the President of the United States must be censored and his right for the freedom of speech denied.
