Our Masshole roads

Frankie has lived here long enough to know how to use "wicked" correctly, but she still can't find her way around our sign-less cow paths. Take, for example, her attempt yesterday to get to Wellesley College, in a trip that left her somewhere in the middle of Godforsaken Weston:

... I wandered around aimlessly on the unmarked roads until I reached a small cluster of civilization. Oh look! A woman walking with a baby carriage! I pulled over to ask her for directions, but she took one look at my 11 year old car and high tailed it on out of sight as fast as her Talbots-wearing ass could go. Apparently, she mistook my ghetto-mobile and that self-knitted blue and grey scarf I was wearing as an obvious sign of my gang affiliation. I was clearly undergoing some sort of ritualistic initiation where I ask a soccer mom for directions to Wellesley College and beat her senseless with her own Coach bag when she approaches my car. ...

If you move somewhere and stumble across a food item that doesn't exactly match the culinary expectations formed by previously living in NY, that doesn't demonstrate the inferiority of the place that you've chosen to grace with your whiny, self-absorbed presence.

PS: If you can't find your way to Wellesley College WITH DIRECTIONS, you're not as smart as you keep claiming you are.

Yes whiny and self-absorbed were exactly the words that come to mind.

Y'know, Boston bagels have grown on me. But there are Boston bagels and then there are Boston bagels. Both made by Zeppy's. Go to Omni Foods on Rte. 9 in Newton and you get their classic, small, chewy bagels - bagels as they were meant to be, at least within 128. Go to Roche Bros. um, anywhere, and you get their over-inflated, emergency-tire-sized gasbags filled with air. Dough with holes, basically.

Gee, L, I was just thinking the same thing.

She writes well, and I thought it was pretty clear that she's being snarky and kind of going for a Dave-Barry-meets-Margaret-Cho sorta voice. I got the impression that she's writing about personal experiences, though in a satirical sort of fashion that I'm sure isn't how she actually views things. And it's clearly portrayed as a personal journal; it isn't like she's trying to pass it off as a sociological study of the experiences of being a person of color traveling in white suburbs or something -- she's just ranting, and rather creatively, I thought.

Why do people have to get so defensive? Er, well, apparently not defensive enough to post nonanonymously in a few cases, but yeah. Dude, chill, people.

Torrents of hate over somebody making the sort of comment about Boston-area street signs and Weston that probably everybody else has?

I thought it was funny, especially the part about the Weston lady who ran away when the lost person turned out not to be a rich white person.

However, Wellesley College is one of the easier places to get to in the Boston area. Just get on Route 16 going west, and stay on it until you get there.
