Merchants who hate bicyclists

Boston Biker posts photos of two Brighton bike racks blocked by planters from a nearby ice-cream shop. He reports he's moved the planters when the need arose, but they then get moved back in front of the racks.

do these icehats not understand?

Gee, maybe we should just start putting crap in the street where cars want to park because cars are evil and we hate them? Same concept.

From your little rant, I assume you don't drive a car. Not sure what harm the planter is doing... there's still a bike locked to the bike rack.

Did anyone bother asking the business owner why he/she placed the planter next to bike rack, or is it just easier to bitch about the neighborhood ice cream shop online?

Those rack styles are supposed to support 2 bikes at once (on either side of the loop). The planters are clearly taking up 50% of the usable space on that block.

Maybe those planters just need to disappear for the message to get through.

It sounds like you ain't been around here much.

Nobody has to ask the business owner about it in any way because this is a publically owned sidewalk and private items that block necessary fixtures are not permitted.

Hundreds of acres of our valuable city-owned right-of-ways are occupied by parked cars. Why does it matter what someone puts in a parking space? The big picture is that that public space has been "temporarily" turned private. What do WE get for that? Narrow roadways and maybe $1 per hour?

"Why does it matter what someone puts in a parking space?"

Damned if I know, why not ask the plant haters above?

How about just quit complaining about it and find out why it was done and maybe if they wouldnt mind moving them?

From a biker to an (apparent) biker, this is the kind of whiny, "I'm better than you", dont tread on my civil liberties crap that gives bikers a bad name.

Want to ride double abreast? Do it. Want to expect drivers to adhere to the laws? Fine. But just quit whining about such insignificant things. And, dont be a hypocrite...too many bikers that expect their government given rights to be respected will turn around and break other laws. It goes both ways.

Perhaps when (we) bikers start being respectful of others, then people will take biking more seriously - ever consider that?

Are you all sure this is directly in front of the ice cream shop? The two guys who run it are really cool; I can't imagine either of them doing this to tick someone off. They remember names, personal favorites, are patient and generous with servings, and have free treats for doggies. Has anyone just asked them to move the plants??

I thought using the word 'hate' in the title of the post incited some unnecessarily strong reactions. Sorry Adam! Just my opinion. Swirrly Girl didn't help with her over-the-top animosity... not sure what she has against ice cream shops, but this clearly is about more than just small planters being placed next to bike racks!
