Herrell's is history

The Crimson reports on the death of the Dunster Street ice creamery.

long time (and good time) coming

1)The ice cream was some of the most expensive in town. The sizes were more expensive, and one increment smaller than other stores. JP Licks small = Herrels "medium". Herrels compensated by distributing dollar-off coupons which were cute, but annoying to have to keep track of.

2)I've watched the batty old witch that runs the Harvard Square store fly out of her office and weigh the dish they've just scooped out, and chew out the server out on the spot for putting in too much. When you're micromanaging your business that badly, things aren't going so well, are they? Then again, BerryLine weighs all their dishes too, though each server does it on their own, perhaps to give them a good idea of how much they're serving.

3)The Allston store closed/rebranded/whatevered months ago, in what was probably a sign of their impending doom.

4)Harvard Square was overloaded with ice cream stores anyway. Ben and Jerrys is kittycorner from Herrels, Christina's is 2-3 blocks away, BerryLine has been open for 1-2 years, and yeah, JP Licks just opened in a better location, with better/cheaper product, more seating space, and free wifi.

Another fun fact: Emack And Bolios has posted "$10 credit card minimum" signs. Guess what, guys? That's against your merchant agreement with the CC company.

Christina's?

"Christina's is 2-3 blocks away"

Has Christina's opened another shop? Because Inman Square is NOT 2-3 blocks away, it's at least a 1.25 mile walk from Herrell's in Harvard Square.

I'd be happy to learn that they've opened a branch, though!

sorry, lizzie's.

Keep getting those two confused. Either way, Lizzie's is probably the worst ice cream I've ever eaten save the giant brands (with Hood being the absolute worst.)

that's too bad

I like Herrell's. I enjoy JP Licks too, but Herrell's flavors always grabbed me. It's been a usual stop during occasional bookstore forays to Harvard Square.

BofA

I hope they replace it with a Bank of America ATM machine. Its so hard to find a bank machine in Harvard Square these days.

Or...

...a place to get coffee.

I'll be curious to see what new tenant does with the vault.

Yes, for those who want to get their cash...

...from a trendy, "off Square" location...much needed! :)
