Making use of negative space downtown

The Globe asked local designers to come up with alternatives for the Filene's Hole and other vacant construction sites around town. "A vertical algae-powered bioreactor?" Sure, why not?

The rendition of the algae

The rendition of the algae bioreactor is scary because it looks like the arms swing out over the streets of the city.

I kind of like the boardwalk one with the farm animals below grade until I realize that people would just toss garbage in the holes and the animals would be covered in filth. If I had to pick one Id go with the urban garden with a waterfall.

That slide show is a crystal

That slide show is a crystal clear example of how what 99% of architecture schools teach, the design media promotes, and mass design culture celebrates, is utter useless garbage.

At one point I had considered becoming an architect, but one of the things that always turned me off from it was that so much of it didn't seem based in reality. There seems to be a lot of effort put into designing things that are impractical and will never get built. I suppose there are a lot of architects who are designing buildings and places that are supposed to actually be used, but most of what we see in the media is more like whimsical art than anything else.

I have no problem in trying to push the boundaries of what is possible but these schools really seem to be setting kids up to be frustrated underlings for 20 years.

It is from out of these

It is from out of these designs that people form an image of what is possible and what would be good. One or two aspects of a design may be picked, we want people to be creative, that is how things change.

Look at Sci-Fi some of the crazy stuff they were writing about in the 60's are just rolling around now. It did not all come true but small parts do.

Also in some cases it shows that a student understands the underpinings of what they are studying if they can take those rules and produce an image of something that could be built with enough money versus a student who designs something that could never be built even with billions of dollars.
