Report: EMT rushes to help shooting victims - after he shoots them

Unlike the commentators (as

Unlike the commentators (as always), I think we should wait until all the facts are out on this one.

Seems to me that he left the party, an was followed and attacked in his car. The shooting may have been in self defense.

Still, it's unfortunately that a charity event for a fallen friend almost ends up in two additional deaths.

good luck with the self defense argument

Seems to me that he left the party, an was followed and attacked in his car. The shooting may have been in self defense.

If he had time to unlock his glovebox (which requires taking the key out of the ignition in most cases), retrieve a gun, load and fire it...he probably had time to DRIVE AWAY.

He's also going to have to explain how the door was opened, since most cars these days lock the doors after you've driven a bit (it sounded like he drove away, then was found later...if he walked to his car, obviously doesn't apply.)

Also, when it comes to levels of intent, it does not help if you keep a loaded weapon in your car. It signifies that you either expect confrontation where you'd need it, or planned on it.

Having a gun, even as an

Having a gun, even as an EMT, isn't out of the norm. there doesn't need to be intent, especially for having a licensed firearm.

Also, things happen fast and he might have been trying to deter these individuals from malicious destruction of property, and they might have come after him.

Do you drive away with a broken windshield you can't see out of, and allow some asshole to continue to frak up your car?

like I said, let's wait until all the facts are out. Peacefully leaving a party that you had a disagreement with only to be attacked in your own car, and then attending to the disable suspects reeks of self defense. I'm just saying it's premature to demonize this guy before all the facts are laid out.

there doesn't need to be

there doesn't need to be intent, especially for having a licensed firearm.

There does need to be intent for a crime, especially a serious one like manslaughter or murder, to the extent that we have this little thing called "degrees". And when you keep a loaded firearm in your glovebox, questions arise as to why you felt it necessary to have it there, when it was placed, and it speaks to your character and demeanor.

YOUR car vs. "most cars"

Most cars do not have a locking glove box, and only certain types of "family cars" lock all the doors once they are underway.

Your car may do these things - and I have had cars that do these things - but not all cars do.

I could be mistaken, but...

...wouldn't a licensed firearm need to be in a locked storage place? Not positive this is the law here, or whether he had a concealed carry permit, but I thought guns were supposed to be locked up. I do know that homeowners insurance claims don't pay out if your loaded gun or your ammo are in an unlocked container and someone does something with them.

Better, of course, than not

Better, of course, than not helping them, and leaving them there on the sidewalk. Given that one's still in poor condition, it's not improbable that he saved his life.

Might be worth reserving judgment on this one. From the preliminary accounts, they were all friends, and everyone involved had been drinking. There was an argument. The EMT had the good sense to walk away, and returned to his vehicle. Someone (presumably, one of the victims) then smashed in his windshield, and someone (possibly, again, a victim) opened the driver's side door. The licensed handgun was in the glovebox.

So they key questions here are going to go to intent. Did this guy, in fact, take steps to avoid confrontation? Was he acting in self-defense, at genuine fear for his life? Or did he shoot his gun unnecessarily, over-reacting to a fight with friends?

On the face of it, treating the victims right there at the scene suggests he wasn't trying to kill them. But we won't know until the dust settles.

stop breaking bretts balls

for leaving them there on the sidewalk. oh im sorry wrong post.

from what i read they were not all friends. this guy worked with the deceased brother and they just let him come back to the house because of that fact. then he seems to have turned into some kind of weirdo drunk guy. he left and came back. the whole story sounds weird to me. sounds like a bunch of white trash, beer guzzlin gone wrong.
