Flaherty to announce Yoon as deputy mayor if he wins

File under: Floon!

Sam Yoon and Michael Flaherty have scheduled a press conference for 10:15 a.m. tomorrow. Dale Herbeck tweets it's to announce that Yoon will be "running" as Michael Flaherty's deputy mayor.

Herbeck says this is the "BIG development breaking in Boston mayoral race" that David Bernstein at the Phoenix teases he's writing up right this second. Gin Dumcius at the Dorchester Reporter tweets one of his sources has confirmed the story. UPDATE: Bernstein confirms after he got Twitter-scooped on his own story.

Dale Herbeck just created his account a few minutes ago and wasted no time in going after Flaherty, he is highly suspect. A google search shows the name to be that of a local BC professor in communications but he does not seem to be smart enough to be a professor.

File under, rumors without merit.

With confirmation from Gin Dumcius, reporter at both the Dorchester Reporter and State House News Service, who is a well established, reliable reporter (conflict of interest note: I do work for the Reporter, including setting up the Lit Drop blog for Gin and Mike Deehan).

Is this legal?

Say it ain't so, Mike. We don't want Yoon.

Watch out Menino Machine. These two, together will take your machine down.

I don't see how this is good for Yoon. If they lose, he is gone for good. If they win, he wastes away into obscurity.

And just like endorsements, his people (votes) won't automatically go to Flaherty. I think the concept sounds like a good idea until you really think about it.

I voted for Sam Yoon because I wanted Sam Yoon to be mayor.

I'm voting for Michael Flaherty because he's not Tom Menino.

I am not the only Yoon voter who thinks this way.

We both voted for Kevin - he sealed the deal around 10:42 AM on election day for me. I am good friends with two more people who voted for Kevin, as well.

We'll all be voting for Mike/Sam. Together, they're older than the Mayor. That's why I'm voting for them. Ha, ha. Ha?

When will we see the info on boston.com or bostonherald.com? 9 AM?

I'm going to try to be there for the news conference. Live twittering, of course!

Why wouldn't it be? Smart move by flaherty--this exactly what I (and many many others) want

not a big flaherty fan, but this sounds much better than the status quo.

Old-style Boston pol with new-style policy wonk (and I mean that in the best way). Will bring in those disaffected Yoon voters who couldn't stomach pulling the lever filling in an oval for a guy who's said he wants to be Menino circa 1993.

But it still only gets Flaherty up to 45% of the preliminary vote.

I voted McCrea and was going to vote Menino because he has a shorter shelf life and would leave a better chance for a true change in 4 years. Flaherty sounded to me like electing Menino for another 16 years. I would vote for him now.

Bernstein just said Flaherty sent an email saying that if he wins he will serve two terms. then set up Yoon to win in 2017. Isn't that premise (16 years in office) and setting up other people (Consalvo) what Yoon and Flaherty have been attacking Menino on.

Not 16.

Good point on setting up Yoon, but it's not the same thing: Under the Consalvo Conspiracy, Menino would maneuver his godson into the city council presidency, then resign, making Consalvo mayor without benefit of an election. In contrast, Yoon would still have to convince voters to make him mayor in 2017.

Between that and the e-mail situation, I'm pretty much assured to vote for Flaherty now.

But, Flaherty, there's gotta be a good policy position for McCrea in your new City Hall. Get him in there and I might even give you some money.

Smart move only if you like Yoon. I would have looked more closely at Flaherty, but his bringing Yoon on board seems to much like a stunt for me to take him seriously any longer.

stunt... ha!

you are so thin you're transparent.

The city of Boston is in a financial crisis. Do you think paying an unseasoned politician with a lack of real world experience a hefty salary for a position that was previously nonexistent a financially wise thing to do?

Please tell me, what do you have against Menino?

Get rid of the city employees being paid to sit around and anonymously spam blogs about how awesome Lil' Tommy is and we'll have enough money to pay for Yoon's salary and probably one for McCrea as well!

Here - Flaherty/Yoon signs to replace plain old Flaherty signs.

Once the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor settle in will City Hall go back to things as usual?... How can we see that doesn't happen? How can we ensure City Hall opens up with their election?

WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THEM?!?!

Hey for once since Ive been here he has made a valid point, we may never see this happen again in our lifetime.

Way to use Sam, Mike.

Sam, your ivy league education was a waste of money.

Good luck finding a job and paying off those mortgages guys.

The Globe quotes Menino's PR guy:

"This is a blatant attempt to confuse the voters of Boston, because implying that he's going to run for deputy mayor is something that exists outside of the bounds of the law," Martin said yesterday. "These are desperate tactics by a desperate individual. This seems to be both councilors saying if they can't win their way, they'll try to reinvent the rules."

I will have you know that my aluminum siding is painted, and is often mistaken for well-maintained clapboard. So there.

The Menino Machine should be careful talking about illegal activities. There is nothing illegal about appointing a Deputy Mayor. Now electronically shredding public records - that's illegal. This is the Ticket for Change in Boston.

More projection going on in that statement than a 22 screen multiplex.

Rewriting the rules with the assent of the people isn't a problem. Ignoring inconvenient laws is a huge problem that mayors across the commonwealth need to come to grips with or face the consequences.

Suddenly sticking to the law matters? Well, then, at what point will the Menino administration put Kineavy up for criminal violation of the public records laws?

Until then, piss off.

Cripes, I didn't even know Boston had an office called "Deputy Mayor."

You can put lipstick on a pig, but he's still a pig.

You can put Yoon with Flaherty, but you still get Flaherty for Mayor.
