Boston DPW unremembers Edgar Allan Poe

By adamg - 9/30/09 - 8:44 am

UPDATE: Box to return!

Mike Mennonno reports the transformer box by the Common that had been painted in honor of Edgar Allan Poe back when city officials claimed to care about the native-born writer has been repainted a standard dull gray:

... The least they could've done is painted it black.

Mennnonno provides the before and after photos.

Ed note: Seems kind of weird given that program Boston has to let artists paint circuit boxes across the city.

I saw an artist working on that maybe a month ago. It barely had a chance!

This paint job is a lesson

This paint job is a lesson for everyone. If you want the respect of the DPW guys, then don't call them "Frogpondians."

somebody better tell BPD, too

Funny. I watched a guy painting a circuit box in JP get the fifth and sixth degree from a cop. Forced him to give over his ID and the whole nine yards. Lots of pointing and talking-at, too.

Middle of the day on a weekend, on Centre street. Clearly up to no good in the 'hood.

My guess is they were painting over graffiti.

Another Theory

It might be possible that painting the box black would cause it to overheat?

Sad to see a nice piece of art wrecked like that - was it painted over or was the entire box replaced? It may be the perspective, but the shape of the box looks slightly different in the photos.

Looks the same size to me

Even the warp at the bottom of the door.

I'm guessing actually replacing the box would involve uninstalling all the equipment inside and then reattaching everything.
