Some neighbors blow back at idea of wind turbine at West Roxbury private school

Wicked Local West Roxbury reports a brewing controversy involving Roxbury Latin School, which wants to put up a temporary 200-foot-tall tower to see if conditions at one of the nation's oldest schools are suitable for a permanent wind turbine.

A similar proposal at Millennium Park died when the city Parks Department refused to give a West Roxbury resident permission to conduct wind studies there.

I don't get it

RL has about 34 acres of woods sitting between itself
and WR Crushed Stone. Seems like there's plenty of
space away far enough away from neighbors so that it could
go up and not annoy anyone.

Ah... the wonders of alternative energy.

Is there anything ever proposed in WR....

Is there anything proposed ANYWHERE....

...where whiners don't come out? Not really.

As a side note, we were recently up in P.E.I. where there is a 10-turbine wind farm on East Point, with 90-meter blades. These things were soooo cool. In this case, the turbines were just plopped in the middle of potato fields. My wife made the comment that they are really soothing to watch.

West Roxbury residents should visit Medford

where they will discover that a wind turbine and a middle school get along just fine right next to each other.

What's especially funny

Some of those people can probably hear/feel the explosions from the quarry next to the school property (yes, of course West Roxbury has an active quarry, with blasting and everything).

Having said that, however, I'd be remiss in not noting that I didn't much cotton to the idea of putting a 100-foot-high windmill on top of Millennium Park.

Thank you community

Thank you community involvement and empowering people. This is what you get. Rule #1 of planning: there is always someone somewhere who wants to block everything.

The wind turbines make noise

By anon (not verified) | Mon, 10/26/2009 - 5:29pm

The wind turbines make noise and they bring down property values. The school is dumping on the nearby residents of West Roxbury. People living near them complain of the constant droning and whooshing noise of the turbines. People actually develop health problems. The woods behind the school is a beatiful natural area and they would ruin it with the turbine and the large access road needed to build and service it. There is a place for alternative energy sources but it's not in the middle of a crowded residential area. It will only benefit the school, not the community. Let them put in solar panels if they want to save energy.
