The concept of of diminishing returns from higher taxation, especially during a depression, seems to be lost on our clueless political class. Then again these are the same people whom are writing and voting for bills, which they admit to not fully reading or understanding.

Our state and country is in the very best of hands.

It never occurred to them that people would buy less because of the tax. They have 17 different causes pestering them, each saying "just raise taxes 1% for me, nobody will notice".

Raise sales tax 1%? Of course it wont change consumption patterns! Nobody noticed such small changes.

Raise the gas tax by 10 cents? OMG THE PEOPLE! Can't do that in a recession!

Raise parking meters by 25 cents? You're killing small business!

Raise the MBTA fare by 20%? It's necessary and won't affect ridership.
