Variety is the spice of mayoral campaigns

The Globe has the dry account of Flaherty boycotting some variety show because they wouldn't let his young ward Sam on stage since he's no longer a candidate (but they made an exception for Tito Jackson and, um, the rest of the Jackson 10), while the Herald has the photo suggesting a post-November career for Yoon as a Blues Brothers impersonator.

Meanwhile, Bruce Mohl fact checks assertions by both Menino and Flaherty in Thursday's debate; finds both played a bit loose with the truth.

Also, there's apparently a shortage of pens and paper at Flaherty HQ. Won't you help?

The 'candidates only' rule did not apply last night to other people - only the Flaherty-Yoon ticket. Look at the Fox News report on the event. Tito Jackson had a huge group of people - all 'non-candidates' on stage with him. This was another attempt by the Menino Machine to strong arm and bully. This was a variety show! Menino and his hacks really can't help themselves.

Thanks for pointing that out; I've amended my post. Here's the Channel 25 report:

Typical Menino - scared of the Floon Ticket and puts the kibosh on them playing a song. Time to get this machine out of City Hall.

The art lovers in Hyde Park must be real proud of themselves today after bowing to the Menino Machine and banning a song! Today would be a great day for them to burn books.

Flaherty should not have boycotted the event. He has to show he is capable of running for mayor without Yoon by his side at all times. After all Yoon will have no obligation to stay in city hall and Flaherty will have no obligation to keep him on. Plain and simple anyone who votes for Flaherty needs to be comfortable with Flaherty being mayor and be ok with the possibility that Yoon may not be around at the end of the 4 years.

On the other side Tito Jackson got to have his dancers on stage why could Flaherty not have Yoon as a back up singer etc. As a matter of principle if you will not allow Yoon on stage you have to make it accountable to everybody and that did not happen. Favortism was obviously at play here.

More impressive than Yoon's keyboard skills was that Flaherty sang on-key "in harmony" while Sam sang the melody.

Goes to show, arts & music in the public schools works! (Wait, did Mike go to public schools?)

Petty, mean-spirited and stupid? Perhaps. But what great constitutional issues were involved in this variety show? What criminal laws were broken?

You could make an argument about the 1st Amendment, I suppose. But this seems more about the chill factor that Menino's machinery has on the city. I mean, it was a talent show. Why take it so seriously to ban an act? I'll bet the organizer feels like a schmuck for doing it.

I copy and pasted this from the top of the Herald clip on their Ebony and Ivory song:

Flaherty & Deputy
By Glen Cooper
John Flaherty and Sam Yoon present: Flaherty & Deputy

who cares? the real question is how they are going to reconcile their issues, Flaherty has always been anti-tenant, stopped Sam's legislation as well as the Mayor's; Flaherty used Rule 19 to crack down on progressive "Team Unity" measures and his top public policy measure is an organ donors initiative? How much did we pay for his services over ten years.

PS - dont forget the linkage money he and Jimmy Kelly tried to reroute to the South Boston Neighborhood Trust.
