Rebelling against vaccinations

J.L. Bell proves what's old is new again, with a post on pre-Revolutionary fervor against vaccinations - for smallpox. In fact, anti-vacciners burned down a Marblehead hospital that was providing vaccinations - and when they were arrested, several hundred of their supporters beat back the local militia to spring them from jail.

For the whole story of the
For the whole story of the Marblehead smallpox riots, folks can check out Andrew Wehrman's article "The Siege of Castle Pox" in the September New England Quarterly.
good and we should do it again
if they try that bullshit now
Oh really
Do you have any idea how bad smallpox is?
Flu ain't got nothing on it (which is why I would like to see school-based clinics, but object to compulsory vaccination - your kid dies, its on you).
How old are you anyway ... do you have that telltale mark of vaccination? Or did you come of age AFTER smallpox was irradicated by compulsory vaccination? I know that I was vaccinated during one of the last few years that required it.
You know, the West End might have survived urban renewal if it hadn't been destroyed, in part, because it was a cesspit of polio that vaccination could have helped.
It's not just your own kid's death that's "on you"
What's also "on you" are the people who die because your deliberately unvaccinated kid (or yourself) infected people who are immunocompromised, or are allergic to the vaccine, or who are too young for the vaccine, etc.
this is the exact kind of paranoia and fear
that the gov't uses to instill martial law among other things
Um, not
The statistics about disease transmission and case fatality rates and susceptable populations bear out the reality here.
Sorry if that reality conflicts with romantic visions of whatever.
Some diseases are so severe that they requre mass compulsory vaccination. Either they cause such severe illness that the risks of not being vaccinated are massive compared to the risks of being vaccinated, or because they are pandemic and dangerous. Eitherway, lots of body count.
I'm not buying that H1N1 pigFlu is necessarily one of them, excepting for its uncanny appetite for killing healthy children and conditions of transmission in schools as heating season descends. However, it is hardly a sign of fascism to demand vaccination for school participation and travel any more than it is to demand that you and your car be licensed in order for you to drive.
It's only paranoid
If they're not after you. The bigger problem than the immunocompromised are those of us who got the immunization to the current form of the disease. It's called "herd immunity". At a certain level of immunity in the population, the disease can't take hold enough to create the generations of reproduction necessary to mutate into a form that would escape the current immunization. The more people who serve as non-immunized hotbeds for the disease, the more chances and more time it gets to mutate out of our current controls for those who are immunized. Eventually, it will get around our preparations and EVERYONE is suddenly at risk again regardless of prior immunization. Thousands of immunized people will get infected before we can determine that we're no longer generally safe and new vaccines will need time to be developed (even longer than the turnaround on something like the flu, since no one is even currently working on the disease any more).
This isn't paranoia or fear, it's simple fact. If too many people are not vaccinated, then the end result is to compromise everyone's safety and health.
That's all I'm going to say in response to your nonsense. If you can't discuss the issue from a point of fact on the science of immunization, then stick to your favorite babblepress like Fox News and leave the rest of us to our informed discussions.
Please
Go back to your hole under the Tappan Zee and leave the rest of us be. Thanks.
tappan zee?
who are you talkikng to?
You
The Upstate NY Troll. Maybe I was too far southern for you. Maybe you're more of a Rainbow Bridge Troll.

His Nom de Net
... says it all.
Rage against ... ANYTHING!
So this isn't you?
the truth from someone from ny (upstate)
Odd. You wrote it, I didn't. Then you proceeded to write a blog post and a news story on the "martial law" Fox News nonsense on the bill for controlling a pandemic in the state. And that didn't garner you enough attention, so you've come here in this comment thread to kick it up another notch. That's called trolling.
Upstate NY.
Anti-vaccine troll.
I'm just gluing 1 and 1 together and getting 2. You're the one proving my point for me.
last time i checked this is an open forum
to express your opinion and make comments like everyone else does here just like your self-righteous ass just did.
So because I expressed my opinion here or stated facts and you don't like it that makes me a troll?
Well why are you following me around on here? I'd say that makes you a stalker.
Just because you think something is nonsense doesn't mean it is, or other's wouldn't like to be informed you jackass.
