Hyde Park getting fourth supermarket

In a development project that's actually happening, construction is now proceeding at a snappy pace at the new mall going up where the old paperboard plant used to be on River Street, near the Mattapan line. And there's now a "coming soon" sign for a PriceRite supermarket. It'll join the Shaw's and Americas' Food Basket, both on Hyde Park Avenue, and the baby Stop & Shop on Truman Parkway.

Don't forget the wee Stop & Shop (definitely not SUPER) on Truman. It's the bloated convenience store of groceries.

So easy to pass right by.

My family always has referred to that store as the ghetto S&S. The people there are nice, but the carts are from 1960, they don't have space for new products, etc. It has to be the most run down store in the chain.

Once they're done rebuilding the Stop & Shop on American Legion Highway, I wonder if they'll just shut it down, like they did with the West Roxbury store after they built a new store in Dedham.

It is slated to be rebuilt next year. Its redevelopment was approved by the BRA this year. It will be getting the exact same store that is going in now on American Legion Highway.

...let the suburbanization of Boston continue apace.

This is a pathetic development.

this is hyde park, not exactly the most urban part of the city. With what is happening in the Fenway, I would say Boston is actually becoming LESS suburban...

... but isn't this right on the Milton border?

If you strung a rope across the Neponset and shimmied across, yes, you'd be in Milton. Otherwise, you need to drive five minutes or so in either direction for the nearest bridge.

But we're not really talking West Roxbury suburban here. River Street is a bit more of an urban corridor than that - it's a lot more dense.

Still, we're talking about something that, if not the Davis Square the poster seems to want, still far better than the abandoned and decaying industrial buildings it's replacing.

This is practically In My Back Yard, and I, for one, welcome our new grocery overlords.

Also, potential rope-stringers can use the train tracks to get to Milton instead. Note that this is the Fairmount/Readville Commuter Rail line, so it's not advised.
