This traffic snarl brought to you by the White House

Boston Police relay word of street closings and such for Obama's appearance at the Copley Plaza this afternoon:

Huntington Avenue eastbound from West Newton Street will be closed to traffic from Noon to 4 PM. Within this same time frame, there will be intermittent closings of Dartmouth Street and St. James Avenue as well.

"No Stopping, Boston Police Special Event, Friday" signs will be posted at the following locations:

  • Huntington Avenue, both sides, from Dartmouth Street to Exeter Street
  • Stuart Street, both sides, from Exeter Street to Trinity Place
  • Dartmouth Street, both sides, from Back Bay Station to Boylston Street
  • St. James Avenue, both sides, from Dartmouth Street to Trinity Place
  • Blagden Street, both sides, from Huntington Avenue to 50 yards toward Exeter Street

Drivers are encouraged to avoid traveling in the area if possible on Friday and to pay close attention to all posted parking regulations.

Obama's Boston visit begins at MIT, whose website notes:

The following areas will be closed to all parking from 11 p.m. on Thursday to 3 p.m. on Friday: the Kresge Lot, the Main Lot, and Amherst and Danforth Streets.

Kresge permit holders and Amherst permit holders should park in the West Garage and West Annex Lot. Main Lot permit holders should park in the Stata Center Garage.

From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, there will be no access to bike racks in the Main Lot by buildings 3 through 39 and on the south and west side of the Student Center.

There will also be special pedestrian restrictions in the Main Lot and in the area surrounding Kresge.

Does anyone have information about street closures for the MIT speech, or the travel from MIT to Copley Square?

Does anyone know how this affects the bus stop at St. James and Dartmouth in Copley Square?

I have a friend staying at the Marriott in Copley and I'm meeting him for lunch. Even though we will be on foot for the most part, this roster of closings and times is very handy.

Any word on what time festivities wind up this afternoon, because this provides a major, major opportunity to eff up rush hour this evening.

Any advice besides "Leave early and leave often?"

that he's supposed to take off from Logan at 3:30, which if true, shouldn't screw up the commute more than usual. Also, they don't like to publish motorcade routes ahead of time for obvious reasons.

Who once had 128 blocked off AT RUSH HOUR so he could travel in regal style from Hanscom to a fundraiser at Dick Egan's place in Hopkinton.

Somehow, I suspect there will be at least an attempt at some sort of display.

Either that, or the MIT police will have had the area under surveillence since last Friday.
