Federal grant to bolster AP programs in Boston schools

Boston Public Schools have won a $2.4 million federal grant that officials say will let them strengthen Advanced Placement programs - both actual AP classes in city high schools and classes in middle and K-8 schools to prepare students there for the college-level work when they get to high school. The money will buy textbooks and pay for tutoring for students and training for teachers, BPS says.

Why did Menino launch a $2.5 million-per-year fund for athletics? Advanced academics -- and smart, but undermotivated and undersupported students -- get no love, while athletes get new ballfields. Blegh.
