He watched as a vallet parked it in the Bus zone on Washington in front of Joe Tecce's on Washington Ave in the North End. This place causes a traffic jam on Washington Ave EVERY night.

So he see's me taking pictures on my phone and drops his fork to move the car. Even yells at the vallet guy who ignored him.

Welcome to the world of the rules don't apply to me.

If you pay to valet a car, (or dont pay), is it really your responsibility to make sure its parked legally?

Probably kind of a gray area. Like if you leave your car with a valet and the valet gets pulled over for speeding, the valet would be at fault. If the valet gets into an accident where the valet is not at fault, and the vehicle has no insurance, the owner would be at fault.

If the valet parks in an illegal spot and the vehicle gets a ticket, I would say the valet is responsible for paying, but Im not sure what would happen if the valet simply didnt tell you about the ticket, and then you find out later in the mail that you got a ticket. I dont think the city can fine the driver for the ticket, even though the driver is certainly at fault.

I never really thought about it that much ...

..was absolutely responsible for things like parking violations -- absent a report to the police that the car has been stolen. (Not that the owner can't _try_ to recoup the money from the person actually responsible).

I would argue that there is a difference between legal responsibility and social responsibility. If he received a ticket he would be legally responsible but I do not see how how the restaurant would not pay it for him as the assumption is that when you use a valet service that the valet will follow traffic laws. If this does not happen and is a major issue then maybe the councilor should look into it as that would become part of his job if it was a larger problem.

Unless the valet was a City Councilor as well I do not see how this is a case of the rules not applying to someone important unless the Councilor asked the valet to park in the bus zone. Did you ever stop to think that the guy did not notice his car was being parked illegally until it caught your attention and you started taking pictures? Even by your account it seems like you jumped to judgement.
