Why can't gas stations measure your tire air pressure for you?

Ned Batchelder proposes a sensor system.

... measure their own tire air pressure. That's probably where things are headed.

That would be cool if they actually gave you readings

The air-pressure gauge on my 2007 car only flashes a sad-looking deflated yellow tire if the air pressure gets to be what it considers too low - and doesn't indicate which tire is getting flat. What would be useful is if you could get actual readings so you could add more air before that happens (would be especially helpful in my case since every time I bring the car into the dealership for routine service, it seems like the tires wind up with four different pressures).

Agreed

My wife's 2009 Toyota hybrid shows the PSI number for each tire on its little display when you power down, so things are moving in the right direction.

Cool!

Guess I need to trade in my 2007 hybrid already :-).

Or buy a $12 pressure gauge.

Don't worry

I have one of those. And the new Priuses? Kinda ugly. Think I'll keep mine.

it's a MA thing

In and around Philly, the gas station air hose thingies all have pressure gauges built into them. I'm not sure what the hell is wrong this state in this regard. Probably some stupid law.
