Many Wards had no blanks and I only saw a few handfuls of write in votes for Mayor. As much as people made fun of him for it Flaherty made a wise choice picking Yoon. Some areas had NO write in votes which is uncommon for any election, especially one with someone like Yoon in it who got kicked out early on.

A quick look at the numbers from Ward 16 (heart of Maureen Feeney's district) shows that Flaherty barely edged out Menino (Flaherty 3,157 to Menino's 3,112), despite Councilor Feeney's efforts. Does it mean anything? Doubtful, but interesting. (And makes one wonder how effective the Democratic Ward endorsement was too.) Also makes for an interesting scenario for Flaherty should Jack Hart step down from the State Senate...

....there is a large Local 718 presence in 16. Might be the only ward (southie excluded) that did not get "anti 718" backlash.

If (big IF) Hart stepped down....I believe that seat would go to Dot (Marty Walsh?). Southie would have a tough time carrying a winner through. Combine that with a 20K pay decrease from City Council job and more restraints on law practice and I do not see Flaherty going for that seat.

Flaherty should run for DA. He has a good command of many issues concerning public safety and was a an ADA earlier in his career.

A strong organization city wide and the ability to raise money would make him a very formidable opponent to Conley who isn't the most popular public servant in Boston.

....DA, I was surprised to hear Ralph Martin endorsed Menino. Flaherty worked for him as ADA. Cabral also endorsed the Mayor and worked with Flaherty in DA's office.

Not sure his organization is nearly as strong if 718 is not motivated to help out (which they would not be). In addition I dont think it works financially. Said he had to practice law part time to help with family finances. That would go completely out the window if he were to run for DA. I see a nice law firm (has had 1 year of great advertisement) in his future, but who knows.

Ralph Martin did a poll when he considered his run for mayor. He saw the numbers and did what most elected officials, business types and people with interest before city hall did, endorse the mayor.

Andrea Cabral could have been exacting political payback for Michael Flaherty's ill-timed, late stupid endorsement of Stephen Murphy before the primary for Sheriff in 2004.

Either way, not very indicative of anything. Flaherty was a teamster and didn't get his own Teamster local to endorse him. That is rare. That is how big of a personality Menino is in this city.

As a Flaherty supporter and volunteer, I can tell you without a doubt 718 did very little for Flaherty's campaign day to day. Yes they did standouts and they did some literature drops and provided bodies for election day. But they were not motivated volunteers. They would not make phone calls or canvass (no direct voter contact) and overall were not the people I phone banked and canvassed with every weekend. They weren't the many people I saw in the headquarters everyday helping to get Michael elected. They seemingly frustrated the campaign higher-ups everyday with their silly ad campaign and overall stupidity.

It actually looks like Andrea Cabral is very disillusioned with Michael Flaherty for multiple reasons, but her recent verbal attack on him pointed out he has never come to the incarceration centers and hasn't offered support of finding ex-convicts jobs once they return to their neighborhoods.

Ralph Martin didn't really have to endorse anyone. When he first worked as a DA in Boston he worked closely with the Mayor and as he's said multiple times, shares the same value-set as he Mayor. As an African-American, Martin also expressed a level of disgust in how Flaherty has treated communities of color (in effect ignoring them until he needed their votes).

There were people already kicking themselves for not running against her this time. Feeney is definitely ripe for the picking. She's lobbying hard to get an appointed position somewhere because she couldn't stand the thought that people voted against her. I hear Joe McEchearn's name being thrown around as a possible opponent and I have heard that the firefighters might run somebody because of her low-class move of campaigning for Menino in front of their union hall after taking the 718 endorsement and not standing with them when the firehouse brown-outs were happening. It should be interesting. Feeney has quite a few fences to mend.

Joe who??? Does he head up a civic - never heard of him. Nobody can touch Feeney, she's everywhere in the community and the elderly love her.
