and by they way, that 17 stop ride from the Loop to O'Hare sucks bigtime.

A lot of people seem to think that the only route to East Boston involves a tunnel and the only route to the North Shore involves the Tobin. That's only true when you exclude all the other routes, though the tunnel/tobin options are certainly a shorter distance.

does this guy work for the auto industry? Cuz this only makes my need for a car a little more urgent - as the "Alewife to Harvard" fun line of derailment is my daily commute. Joy!

I don't know what is more dangerous now - possible derailment on the Red line, or interaction with people on the Orange Line. it's a tossup.

Already Avoiding the Red Line by Biking

I tend to get sick when I ride crowded trains a lot, so I have been avoiding riding the red line from DTX to Davis already. Ditto for the even more crowded and less ventilated Orange Line from Wellington or Sullivan. I will continue to do so until the Swine Flu vaccine shows up.

I can take commuter rail to and from Porter and West Medford with a folding bike. I also ride all the way between work and home in one direction - 8 miles - almost every day. If I leave my non-folding bike at work, I take the uncrowded but pricey express bus.

Ulterior motives

Of course in the same article where he says he won't take the red line he mentions going to the feds to try and get money. This is just a tactic to try to get the T some money, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If the red line were actually in danger of derailing, I think it would have made the 'to do' list...
