WGBH plans to stay unique by doing the same thing as other stations

WGBH tells the Globe that when the purchase of WCRB goes through, it will eliminate folk and blues programs because there are other outlets for that in Boston (so good news for WUMB, Boston's other other public radio station) and it wants to keep its programming "unique." And by unique, it means adding news and information shows just like the ones WBUR and WBZ already broadcast.

How is this in the interest of the listening public?
I'm a long-time supporter of both 'BUR and 'GBH, and I'm pi**ed off at WGBH. I'm not a classical music listener, but I respect their decision to purchase WCRB and keep that resource available to those who are.
What annoys the heck out of me is this idea that they serve the public more by providing the same programming as WBUR. It's great when I can listen to The World instead of the annoying Tom Ashbrook. It's wasteful duplication when I can listen to ATC instead of ATC, or choose Morning Edition or Morning Edition.
Why don't WGBH and WBUR bury their institutional hatchets and serve their listeners and contributors by working together instead of competing?

Sometimes I listen to GBH's braodcast of Morning Edition because they air more national content and don't break away for local stuff as much + I get tired of Bob Oakes.
Futurely, I asume they will start generating more local content and provide some competition for BUR in that arena, which could be great for the content on both stations. I am ooing forward to public radio news wars.
Bob Oakes
Can't stand that guy. He used to mainly do the fund-raising, and somehow got promoted to full-time. He is the softest interviewer I've ever heard in my life.

May be time to drop my financial support to them, even though I do listen to other stuff on WGBH radio and watch WGBH TV too. Have been a member for as long as I can remember (30 years +) but this might just break the camel's back.
WGBH
If you live outside the immediate Boston area, you'll never hear blues or folk again because WUMB doesn't have the range.

I recall that Bob Oaks got his step for being a loyal soldier to during the Chris Lydon debacle.
Even smack in the middle of
Even smack in the middle of Cambridge WUMB's signal is very dicey. I can get it in some rooms of my apartment but not in others, and it isn't all that clean at best.
This notion of WGBH's represents major suckage.
Not so!
WUMB has transmitters in Quincy, Worcester and Falmouth (all 91.9); Amesbury (91.7); and Orleans (AM 1170). They can also be heard in western MA on WPNI (AM 1430).
WUMB will soon be on the air in Marshfield and Maynard.
