Fro yo no mo?

Grub Street Boston reports:

Yo! Berry was the first major fro-yo-erie to open in Boston and now, it will be the first to close. Could this be the beginning of a Boston fro-yo backlash? ...

Backlash?

Probably more a case that now there are other, better places to go for the Pinkberry-style fro-yo fix, folks have ditched Yo! Berry.

"It's so good 'cause it's so hood" - not. But Berryline in Cambridge is quite tasty, and I've heard good things about the new shop in Coolidge Corner (can't remember the name.)

Athen's Bakery in washington sq, Brookline.

no, they serve gelato

...and it's abysmal gelato, at that.

Athans is also definitely a fan of passiveaggressivenotes.com...there are notes EVERYWHERE. All over the cases (apparently the general public is incapable of using serving tongs themselves and require "assistance"), even the counters have notes all over them.

fro yo

There's a great fro-yo place on Chestnut Hill Ave between Cleveland Circ and Comm Ave... BC students flock there. I noticed because the staff had problems continuously taking Grants and Benjamins to pay for small purchases of fro yo last time I patronized. I used exact change.

It appears business is going well for them, still open as of 11/11.

Chill!

Absolutely adore Chill. They serve an extremely tart frozen yogurt that tastes best with fruit toppings. Try and make it into a hot fudge sundae and you will be disappointed. I generally can't stand frozen yogurt so I think Chill has put together an amazing product. And they are open late.

Trader Joe's sells a similarly tart frozen yogurt but I like the "soft serve" at Chill better. I adore the original flavor with rainbow sprinkles. I can't find a web site for them but here is a blog post i wrote about them (includes photos):

maybe if their product wasn't a lie...

"Blurs the lines of definition" is the Globe's polite way of saying: calling what they serve at all the frozen yogurt places "yogurt" is an outright lie.

It's like tossing a bunch of chocolate chips into vanilla ice cream and calling it "Chocolate".

Uh, no

This has more to do with the fact that the only time I ordered a frozen yogurt from YoBerry, I literally took one bite and threw the rest in the trash. The stuff was absolutely awful and nothing like Pinkberry or its knockoffs. It was cheap, icy, artificially-flavored crap, and once good frozen yogurt started appearing around Boston, this place was doomed.

The REAL first fro-yo place closed a long time ago

Let's not forget that frozen yogurt was invented in Harvard Square, at The Spa, some 40 years ago. Their boysenberry twist dipped in chocolate was a favorite of mine. Not sure when The Spa closed, but it was a long time ago.
