It's the date of the special primary in advance of the January special election to replace Ted Kennedy. Apparently, virtually nobody knows that.

Apparently the author does not travel through Brookline

The Town Clerk's office has had 5 foot tall "A" style signs deployed on the streets to advertise the special primary for about a month now. They are even reflective so you can clearly see them at night (probably done more for safety than effective communication).
