Braintree to get old-style Italian restaurant

By adamg - 11/17/09 - 10:28 am

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the Chateau, a chain of big ol' Italian restaurants, is opening its seventh location on the John Mahar Highway near South Braintree Square.

We go the one on Rte. 1 in Norwood sometimes. It's pretty cool in an Anthony's Pier 4/Ken's kind of way, only without the sad days-gone-by vibe you sometimes get in those places (plus, there's something relaxing about watching people practice their putting at the golf course on the other side of the picture windows).

Never understood why an Italian restaurant would give itself a French name...

Eh, they share a border?

Best I can come up with...

I still think of that Norwood location as El Torito from way back!

I remember that place!

I never went there after it became the Chateau, but I used to enjoy watching people putting around from El Torito.

Way back

it was a Red Coach Grill.

And when you weren't in the mood for that

There was Finian's just down the road in Dedham, right?

They might as well....

...because the food is about as authentically Italian as french cuisine anyway!

I have no problem with this place though. My dad will be particularly happy to hear this news.

Waltham Location

The one in Waltham, which is the original location, is decent. Nothing fancy, by any means, but they serve OK pasta/sauce/parm dishes/pizza. The ambiance is the big seller, though. Photos of Sinatra/DiMaggio on the walls; old-style red leather booths in some of the rooms (there are four or five separate rooms, all designated by color, as I remember); piped-in Italian-American music (think Tony Bennett and Al Martino); and waitresses that look as though they stepped out of the 60's and wouldn't mind having a glass of ale on their smoke breaks.

You sure you're not confusing that with the Norwood one?

Because you just described it to a T :-).
