The secret pleasures of the condo voyeur

Acidgalore likes looking at Back Bay condo ads:

... I like looking at how them rich people decorate their houses. Oh, yes, decorating style. It's really amusing looking at photos of $2mil dollar Back Bay condos looking like they have been decorated by my grandmother: floral patterns everywhere; curtains, rugs, sofas, wallpaper. Yes, bloody wallpaper. Knick knacks all over the place, stuffy, decaying. One would think money would afford you better taste; guess not. Or hiring a decorator. What? You did hire a decorator? Nevermind. [Sucker] ...

Money can't buy class or taste, and the 'talent' of most 'interior designers' or 'decorators' is dubious at best. This is why even million dollar condos in what had been Victorian palaces look no better than your average McMansion or mid-priced hotel.

That's why one shouldn't use decoration that's labor-intensive for potential buyers to change. That's why this person, although judge-y, brings up a good point. Wallpaper is not a good idea unless one plans on staying someplace long-term or wants to hide imperfections in the plaster. Also, complicated patterns, or patters of any kind, should not be used to prep a place for sale. Color is okay. Lighting. Accessories that are removable - all ok. Wallpaper is just big pain in the ass, floral patterns or not.

Wallpaper is not such a big deal. I had it removed and replaced in several rooms, in others I went with paint. If you or the person doing it know what they are doing, it can be done quickly. The main thing is not to put one layer on top of another, or even worse, to paint over it. Just like with painting, the key is the prep.
