Cue Swirrlly with an oh-so-relevant comment about her days there-- when it was apparently easier to get in-- in 3.... 2....

Another similarly inappropriate coment below (probably by the same anon).

Why it's _not_ abusive for a poster to make an unfair and inaccurate criticism of Adam. I didn't hear anyone screeching about that one. Why not? Do you agree with him? Did you read the article? Did you find any mention of cost, choice, or forcing anyone onto the dining plan? If you did, I'd love to hear it, because I didn't see it... because it ain't there, just a lot of speculation about how something bad will certainly happen-- such as students having to pay the full cost of the food they eat.

And yet you whine about a poster who fires back at an unfair criticism.

Aerion's post was informational in nature -- even if not worded as tactfully as one might prefer. It was not a personal attack. If you are the anon who made a personal attack on Aerion's post, I do think your post was unnecessarily nasty (and inappropriate).

And snippy. The use of "whoosh" implies that some idea has sailed over someone's head. That's personal. Did you not understand what was implied, or did you just dismiss it as something Adam should have taken, along with the criticism? We want answers here.

Also, saying that Adam misunderstood the subject of the editorial is incorrect-- and this has nothing to do with what one does or does not know about MIT's dining plans. Misunderstanding a subject is not the same as not having a deep understanding of a subject; if the editorial had suggested that costs would be raised (which it did not) or that people would be forced into the plan (which it did not), and Adam had missed this, then, yes, he would have "misunderstood" the editorial.

As for what's necessary and appropriate, thanks for sharing your opinions.

As someone who has been rudely and unjustly attacked by swrrly for several fair comments I've made on this site, I think it's only expected, and not unjustly so, for people to poke fun from time to time at those who practice regular online bullying.

Looks like the site rehab came with my very own stalker. Oh Joy.

You've misunderstood the subject of the editorial. The campus dining debate is about raising the cost of campus life, by making a dining plan mandatory for all students and/or by raising the cost of dining plans. It has nothing to do with food selection.

Although technically, I suppose requiring students to buy a plan would be changing their food selection. In any case, I've changed the wording, thanks for point that out.

I appreciate the quick response :) The original article doesn't really make clear what it is the author is complaining about because this has been going on for over a year, so it's presumed the target audience already knows what the issues are.

Anyway, apparently the dining controversy is cyclical. Something like this happens every few years, the students get all vocal about it or something, and then we graduate and everybody stops caring. *shrug* Guess MIT students can't put up a fight like California students...

The students have successfully gotten kitchens installed in dorms and resisted the imposition of mandatory dining plans - why would they need to fight when they keep winning anyway?

Actually, _you_ are wrong. Nowhere in the editorial does it mention cost, choice, or forcing anyone to be on a dining plan-- just unspecified "changes", which are presumed by the "writer" to be dreadfully unfair.

Try this: Go to a good school this time-- one that teaches reading comprehension. And manners.
