Even our birds have a Boston accent

Gly, who's from Illinois, learned firsthand that birds in the Boston area sound different from birds in the Midwest:

... Several years ago we visited some friends in Boston in early spring who lived in Nahant, a sort of island in the ocean connected by a causeway to the mainland. One morning before breakfast we were wandering about (you folks in Boston sure have a lot of granite boulders!) and I heard what, to me, sounded as strange bird calls. After listening for a while, I realized they were the mating calls of red-winged blackbirds. We live in Illinois and have biked a lot in Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa, so we are quite familiar with red winged blackbirds. While the calls we heard in Nahant were somewhat similar, it would not take an expert to tell that they were different from those of the midwestern species. ...
