Why can't Felix Arroyo drive?
Two years before he runs for re-election (and possibly four years before he runs for mayor), Felix Arroyo quietly let the world know on Friday that a) He's contesting some back auto-excise taxes, b) he owes $25 for a missed 1997 property-tax payment and c) he no longer drives a car:
I also have an unfavorable driving record (I assure you that this does not and will never include operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol). I am now using public transportation.
Alas, his statement doesn't say what he did do to rack up that record.
Update: Sources tell the Hub (ooh, we have sources!):
It isn't to do with alcohol or anything of the like. He's just a crappy driver, and he knows it, so he's stopped driving. Actually, a pretty good policy.

Ahem.

Oh, I don't know, I don't know
It's probably just the contrarian in me, but in this case, I don't think it matters.
Yes, public officials are "public" officials, but maybe once in awhile, somethings could be private.
He is clear - it wasn't because of a drinking incident. If it was hitting someone or something criminal, it would have shown up.
People don't drive a lot of times because they have high insurance rates. He says "unfavorable" record. That sounds like he got lots of tickets or something or violations (speeding, for one).
I can forive him this, and I actually find it funny he said unfavorable.
It's a bit embarrassing that he had to tell everyone about a $25 excise tax issue - but, he must have been terribly afraid it'd end up on the cover of the Herald. Same thing about the property tax payment. But, that's the world we live in. The media doesn't put things into perspective and latches on to everything.
We all benefit because he uses public transportation - maybe everyone in government should?
Good Man
I actually think he's acted pretty responsibly. If he has accidents and isn't a great driver, then it's awesome that he takes public transportation. You know, even if he's a great driver, it's great that he takes public transportation.
And, I might add, the car he WAS driving was powered by vegetable oil, so he's all about the environmental choices.
