Keep the Internet open

Boston is the birthplace of the American Revolution. The time has come again for Bostonians and all Americans to stand again for their interests as a people and a nation to demand their birth rights including that of free speech and an open marketplace of ideas.

AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon are making a play to fundamentally change the way the Internet works. If they succeed, we'll all lose. A free and open Internet is critical for our communities to speak in our own voices and to organize and advocate for ourselves. Congress.org has the recent developments.

Before the Internet, there was a high barrier of entry into publishing. Now, a journalist like Adam Gaffin can build a site like UniversalHub and cover a segment of Boston news left unexplored by the big news organizations and, provide a forum for the news to be discussed by interested parties who live in the hub.

Join us in calling on the FCC to aggressively re-establish its authority and protect the open nature of the Internet now.

Many politicians and organizations are spearheading this effort including Sen Franken, ColorOfChange, freepress, MoveOn, Rep Edward Markey and John Kerry. Join one of them or more in supporting net neutrality. If you know of other organizations advocating for net neutrality please provide links in the comments.

If ISPs have the right to prioritize their own content, you could be forced to wait for UniversalHub pages to load while Comcast and Verizon-provided content loads up likity split.

Net neutrality can preserve the democratic nature of the internet, which was built on technologies financed by your tax dollar.

Is the FCC losing its resolve to protect the open Internet? It recently convened a series of closed-door meetings with a few massive corporations to cut a deal over who would ultimately control the Internet.

The FCC can't bargain away its authority to protect Net Neutrality without first hearing from the public. That's where you come in. Please answer the questions below and get the FCC to work for you, and not AT&T.

Net neutrality
No, these are special puppies
Google has joined Verizon in lobbying to erode net neutrality

Aug 12th 2010 | WASHINGTON, DC

TWO firms want to redefine the internet. Or so it seems, judging by the “legislative framework proposal” that Google and Verizon, an American telecoms operator, published on August 9th.

Since May the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been considering reclassifying broadband internet access as a telecommunications service. Under existing law, this would give the commission the authority to enforce “net neutrality”: the principle that all data, regardless of origin, should move at the same speed.

The commission last ruled on this in 2002. It heeded cable-broadband providers, who argued that, since they offered e-mail and web hosting along with their internet access, they were really selling information services, which are more lightly regulated. The Supreme Court agreed, though a dissenting justice observed that a pet store might just as logically package its puppies with leashes and then argue that it sold leashes, not puppies. Now, as the FCC regrets its ruling, Google and Verizon are lobbying for Congress to declare wireless services open to data discrimination.
