Alone at the bus stop with the kids

Halley wonders why she's usually the only parent at the school bus stop in the morning:

I just don't think you can ever be lax about their safety, so I always go out there with my kid. And I wonder what the other parents are thinking, ... what if something happened to their kid? There are cars driving by in all directions and unfortunately, you have to imagine the worst could happen, in order to protect them and keep them safe.

Why should parents need to

Why should parents need to wait with their kids at a bus stop? My parents never did. Neither did the parents of any of the other kids the bus picked up after me.

Nothing fundamental has changed about the nature of kids, parents, or school buses since that time.

My parents never waited at

My parents never waited at the bus stop with me past kindergarten (and that was mostly because they were required to), but perhaps they should have. A little girl in my school district was run over and killed by a bus when she was 6. Her lunch box fell open and she crawled under the bus to retreive a rogue apple. The bus driver never saw her and proceeded to go while she was under the bus. A parent there probably could have prevented it.

I myself was nearly hit by a car while waiting at the bus stop one morning in the 3rd grade. A woman in my neighborhood was apparently running late for work and wasn't paying attention when she ignored a stop sign, took the corner at high speed and drove right up over the grass where I was waiting. She came within a couple of inches of me and never stopped.

Of course, that's not to mention the fights that would break out between students and such at the bus stop.

Maybe parents are just getting smarter to be waiting with their kids.

It was pretty lame if your

It was pretty lame if your parents waited at the bus stop with you when you were a kid. I feel it's an alarming trend with parents being highly overprotective with their children. I used shake my head when I drove in from the suburbs and I saw the line of SUV's "waiting" at the bus stop. I used to stand out in the freezing cold, waiting for the bus, with friends, on my own. Hell, I used to walk to school when I was 10. I don't think it's any more dangerous than it was 20 years ago, parents are just too anxious. I plan to send my daughter to the bus stop, alone. Hee hee. Builds character.
