Mr. Cynic rains on Copley Square

Mr. Cynic, a.k.a. John Keith, explains why the square just doesn't quite click - and it's not just because of all the skater doods.

Because I just don't see it. Sure it's easy to 'prove' the square is underutilized when you're taking pictures during cold weather.

He needs to come and check it out in the later Spring, all of summer, and early autumn months. We've got classical music at lunch one day a week, the Farmer's Market 2 days a week from June - Nov., some sort of music something-or-other one early evening per week, and assorted other stuff happening. Lots of folks from the Hancock Tower and Berkely Building offices hang out in the square on their lunch hours when it's warm -- you'll see tons of folks getting some sun on the church steps or on the benches ringing the square, or sitting with their feet in the fountain, or lounding on the grass.

Reading his post it sounds more like he just doesn't like it, personally, not so much that it's a vortex of boredom or uselessness in the objective sense.

Also, he's way exaggerating the homeless/druggy/crazy person issue. 'Tens if not hundreds'? What a load of crap. If there are 2 dozen troubled souls there on any given day, that would be the most I've ever noticed. And I walk through it ever. single. weekday. And often Saturdays, too.

And the skater kids? Sweet kids if you bother to smile and say hi. Just sayin'.

And so what if there ARE some people enjoying the square who have major mental illness and/or who don't currently have a home? There are a lot of people who can be categorized this way who are very important to me. I don't understand the mindset that someone with one of these labels hanging out somewhere makes it bad. Most of these folks have similar taste to mine and like a lof of the same spots.
