Jennifer Garrett wonders what's up with the birds singing just before midnight:

Is this yet another sign of the apocalypse? Are they rabid?

Probably mockingbirds - warming up for their 3 a.m. show.

This has been happening in Dorchester, too! I feel like I am living in the wilds of Vermont. I noticed this started happening the night when that never ending rain finally stopped. I guess their natural sleep cycle was so disrupted that they wake up at 11:30 now?

Unfortunately, we've been afflicted with a mockingbird for several years. He sits on the street light outside our bedroom and sings his little heart out at 3 or 4 a.m., the better to attract his lady friends. It's incredibly cool for about 30 seconds and then you realize he's never going to shut up and you get the urge to shimmy up the pole and throttle him - especially when it's now Night 6 - Your Sleep Held Hostage.

But, hmm, I don't recall hearing him so far this spring. Maybe he's moved to Dorchester? :-).
