Newbury Street smackdown

Mike Mennonno would pay to watch a no-holds-barred rumble between the sidewalk-sign fascists and people who think maybe the city has more important things to worry about than sandwich boards on Newbury Street.

Charles Swift, meanwhile, digs deep into his archives to discover that Boston has had ordinances against blocking the sidewalk since at least 1833.

Ugh!

Five IDS workers to remove the signs?

I'm all for allowing the signs, but if the city must crack down, why not send one worker out to issue citations and not remove the signs? If owners keep the signs, they may be inclined to post the signs again allowing the city to cite them again, and generate more revenue.
