Kristie Helms goes out canvassing her Bourne Hill neighborhood for Deval Patrick and discovers:
We got to meet a lot of fantastic people, found a lot of supporters and I realized just how intensely radical and involved my Roslindale/Jamaica Plain neighborhood is. I think I nearly got recruited for a couple of different revolutions being plotted out of the Bourne Hill area. ...

Yeah, JP/Rozzie rock.
Yeah, JP/Rozzie rock. Progressive politics is still intact here.
Unsuspected Lefties
Way back, flashy-backy...
You remind me (I'm old) of when I campaigned door to door for George McGovern in the 1972 President's race. I was on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, surrounded by obviously conservative Russians and Eastern Europeans who had fled Communism.
I knew it was going to be tough, but I canvassed. Most residents were old women, who either didn't speak English or would not speak to a hippie. It was discouraging.
However, it was my prejudice. In fact, most of those in the neighborhood were strongly for McGovern; our precinct voted overwhelming for him. I have absolutely no doubt now that I convinced no one. Rather, I was wasting my time because they were already left-leaning, anti-war voters.
It can be very pleasantly surprising where like-minded voters are hiding.
