Woman jumped, stomped in the Back Bay; stabbers cheered in Dorchester

Around midnight, BPDNews reports, a woman walking on Boylston Street was allegedly jumped by three hoods who knocked her to the ground, then kicked her in the head and pointed a gun at her as they dragged her five feet while trying to get her to shut up and shake her Prada and Fendi bags loose. After a couple of chases, the cops nabbed one of the alleged perps. The victim was treated at the scene.

Meanwhile, over in Dorchester, four fine specimens of manhood allegedly cheered as their two female companions stabbed a 13-year-old girl in the stomach yesterday afternoon.

profiling, please

Three black males walking in the Back Bay after midnight.

What I want the police doing is stopping them on sight, identifying them, and letting them go if they have no warrants (what are the chances?). And, yes, I want the police doing the same thing to three white males walking on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan after midnight.

People out of place in neighborhoods late at night should be stopped and ID'd.

My two cents.

And your two cents...

whether intentional or unintentional, are racist. I know Black people who have lived in the Back Bay their whole lives. It would be outrageous if they had to show ID everytime they were walking around their own neighborhood. I like to think that America is better than making people show papers based on their ethnicity. Why don't we just make Jewish people wear yellow stars on their sleves, so when they walk down Broadway, the police can stop them, too?

You Got Until Sundown

Are you serious? Is the Back Bay a white neighborhood, with no blacks allowed in town after sundown? Is that why they're "out of place"? Let's see now, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and Wily Mo Pena leave Daisy Buchanan's at 12:30 A.M. Using your logic, the police should stop them and ID them for being in the Back Bay after midnight. No Muslims in Coolidge Corner after midnight either I suppose.

What a pathetic racist argument. And you ask what are the chances the three black males don't have outstanding warrants? Nice to see that you look at black men and can only see criminals. Oh, and I'm sure you know all about Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan after midnight.

That is the most ridiculous

That is the most ridiculous comment I have ever read here since Adam created the Universal Hub.

Every neighborhood belongs to everybody. There is no such thing as being "out of place" in a neighborhood. I have the right to visit Simco's late at night, and my Black friends have the same right to walk around the Back Bay without being harassed by the police.

(In any event, three young black males walking around the Back Bay together are most likely students at BU, Northeastern, Berklee, or Emerson.)

good points

By carpundit | Thu, 08/17/2006 - 10:07pm

TBlade and JCS make good points. My shorthand was shorthand. I'll elaborate. I meant to make the point that strangers to a neighborhood should be stopped. Race is one element. It's a big element, but it's not enough alone. There's age, clothing, bearing, familiarity with surroundings, behavior, and more.

To the extent my previous comment was interpreted as an argument for stopping people based solely on race, I retract it and apologize for the poor explanation. "What are the chances?" was [what are the chances the police will do this], not [what are the chances there are not warrants]. Bad syntax; sorry.

But the commercial area of

But the commercial area of the Back Bay is not really a "neighborhood". It's the city's second downtown, a place to shop, eat, or just hang out. Everyone belongs there, regardless of age or style of dress.

It is also a tourist area, full of hotels, which means many people there will not be "familiar with their surroundings."

So, segregation = good?

>People out of place in neighborhoods late at night should be stopped and ID'd.

This is truly shameful, Carpundit. You can say that it's not just about race, but what criteria are police to use in judging whether people are "out of place"? it'll be what they see in passing--race, style of dress, indications of wealth, etc.

And for police to identify who's out of place, neighborhoods must be as homogeneous as possible. A mixed neighborhood makes it hard to tell who's out of place, right? Maybe we could even bring back some retrictive covenants and other tools to segregate housing to make it really clear who knows their place and who's getting out of line.

As white Jewish guy living in Fields Corner, I wonder how often I'd be stopped while walking home. And please don't tell me that the cops would recognize me as a resident--cops around here rarely get out of their cars, let alone meet people.

Shameful.
