New for the Playstation 3: Lord of the Flies, Copley Edition

Quite the nuthouse around town early this morning as frenzied people willing to forego showers for several days rushed local retailers trying to get their hands on the latest Playstation console. Cops had to shoo rain-sodden hordes away from the Fenway Best Buy because the store didn't have a permit to open at midnight. Then there was Copley Place, where people camped out for days to await the opening of the Sony Style store this morning. Alexander Sliwinski reports from the scene (and posts photos of people in tents):

... As the rain pours down in Boston, with thunder and lightning accompanying, a couple hundred people devoted to purchasing a PS3 are left standing outside the mall. Two factions have sprung up and the tension is building. ...

The brutal aftermath (but at least nobody got shot).

Miss Browneyedgirlie spotted some of the Copley campers as she left work around 10 last night. She says it's all yet another thing about men that mystifies her:

... I understand that it's entertainment. And that it's a stress reliever. I get all that, I do.

It's the urge to put your life on hold for as long as it takes to get that gleaming hunk of plastic in your strong hands that has me scratching my head in wonder. ...

Amy is more blunt: What the fuck is wrong with people?

When Apple released OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), they closed all their stores early in the evening and reopened them at 10:20 pm. At the CambridgeSide Galleria store, huge lines formed hours in advance, and they didn't get the last customer out of the store until about 1:50 am. (That was me.)

Apple learned from that experience that they should release their operating systems earlier in the evening, but the same lines form each time. I'm sure you'll see them again next spring when 10.5 (Leopard) is released.

Broweyedgirl says that it's one more thing about men that confuses her. With that I would have to agree, however, in defense of the guys, we have our bridal dress rush. I have never been but I think I would rather have the skin flayed off my body.

Pay $600, turn around and get $2000 on eBay. Why is it so hard to understand why some people camped out for these damned things? I'll be at least 50% of those people never opened the box. The other 50% had to camp out because of the first 50%.

Of course, in two months you'll be able to get one on sale, but I digress.
